I use the stationary bike at the Y and it says I only burned like 90 calories for 20 minutes....MFP says over 200...which is right or at least closer to being right. This will drive me nuts

Replies

  • The bike is correct as its counting your speed, how long, and the resistance. MFP is usually really high.

I agree...the bike's probably not completely accurate, but it's most likely way closer than MFP.

    probably somewhere in between...

I have found MFP has a tendancy to overestimate - as if the calorie burn for the whole time was at your high heart rate...

I have also found the burn on machines can come in a little low...the ones that have a place to check your heartbeat are a bit more accurate but most of the time you are inputting limited information into the machine - maybe your weight...and age...

Using an HRM is as close to accurate as you are going to get...but I would probably take the lower number rather than the higher number...cause if you go with the higher..and overeat..will have worse consequences..

I guess I will have to invest in a HRM. I know my heart rate doesn't stay up as high on the bike as it does on the treadmill, but I like it for my slow down time and resting period before I get in my car to leave. And the side benifit is it works my upper thighs and burns a few more calories.

I finally invested in a hrm. I've been working out for several years already and discovered that the #'s on the machines & mfp were higher than my hrm.

Mine does too. Some days, I really, really hate my hrm.
