My bf got me an early present...a Polar F11 Watch! It uses a telemetry strap to monitor HR..but it also does RHR tests, "OwnZone" to determine your cardio fitness, creates programs according to your fitness/training level and goal, tracks calories burnt (including what % from fat), notifies you as to how long you should keep your HR in a certain area, keeps track of your workouts, and automatically evals your progress every Sunday at midnight.

Oh, and it tells time and has a light too

I used it today for my "marathon" day...it's my day of serious endurance and interval cardio. I chose how long I wanted to exercise (60 min) and it split that into 20 min high intensity, 20 min moderate, and 20 min low intensity. The longer the program, the more time you spend in the mod/low areas, and it's the opposite for short programs.

If you have a bday/anniversary coming up or you have some extra cash, this is a great investment. Mine is super involved, but you don't need all the extras. You can get one for anywhere from about $50 to $200.

Hey, I have one of these. They are Awesome arent they? Course I never use all the bells and whistles, but they do keep much more accurate calorie numbers then your basic gym machines can.

They are! It took me about a half hour to figure everything out lol but it was worth it. Once I get used to it all the gizmos will be a breeze :)

I have a cheapo one - just does HR, but now I'm jealous! I got my resting HR at the end of yoga - it's gone down almost 20! That will have to be my present for now.

    Happy Birthday, by the way.

    Hey Songbyrd,
Saw your post a while back about the heart rate monitor, so I started looking into them. I'm thinking that I might like the one that you wear on your wrist without the strap around your chest. I believe the model that I'm looking at is a Polar F4 or F6. Have you heard anything about these models? I basically want one that will record my calories while I walk outside, etc. I believe that I read that these hrms do not have a replaceable battery. Is that true of yours? What are your thoughts?
    Pam

Oh! And Happy Birthday. You should definitely celebrate. It's worth it!

my sister has the F6 and that also has that strap around your chest. that is for sure better at an accurate reading.

good question about the replacement battery though. i want to know that answer too.

I haven't heard about one without a telemetry strap. They would be more accurate since they take the pulse at the chest rather than the wrist, but one without a strap would still be useful.

The batteries in the straps are manually replaceable. The watch battery must be sent in for replacement, but the unit comes with a multi-year warranty.

The Polar F11 that Songbyrdsweet got for her birthday DOES have a telemetry strap.

Thanks all. If anyone has a hrm with the telemetry strap, do you find it cumbersome? I wonder if I would feel more weighed down than I already am with my iPod, etc already attached to me.....does it attach about in the same place as your bra? How does that work out? I get mildly annoyed by my bra from time to time, so I wonder if I would use it if I buy one like that. Thanks for your patience. Just trying to work out how to best spend my $$$$.

I think it would be a better investment since it's much more accurate. The strap sits right under the chest strap of your bra. It's not great with a regular bra, but it's fine with a sports bra. You can situate it right under your 'bosom' as well, and then the chest strap of the bra would sit on top or underneath it.

The Polar company also sells a "soft" chest strap which they say is more comfy for women than the rubber chest strap that comes with the watch. Its electrode-thingys are in a padded soft velcro-closure-adjustable band. It is spendy, though ($54 or $59 - can't remember which.)

Also, Song, I played with the newest ZEN yesterday; the credit-card-size one with the expandable memory SD card. Verrrrry nice!
