It is the total calories that you eat in a day minus the amount of exercise you do.

It means that its the amount you eat after deducting exercise calories.

For example, if your daily calories burnt/expended before exercise is 2000 and you were set to lose lb a week (=3500 cals/7 days = 500cals) then 'base' calories are 1500.

Say you burn 500 calories exercising, to 'net' to 1500 you would have to eat 2000 calores to keep the same 500 calorie deficit.

In other words, you burn 2,500 (non-workout of 2000 plus 500 workout calories) and you eat 2000 calories - 1500 for the base and 500 for the exercise - so you net to 1500. If you did not eat the extra 500 calories, you would net to 1000.

    Hope that makes sense.

ETA: spidey above me explained it far better in one sentence!!

It is the total amount of cals you have allotted your body to function off of without burning them through exercise. So, Total-exercise=NET.
