Peer reviewed studies, i'm sure they exist, but i don't have any to list.
This pretty much sums it up.0 -
I've switched to snacking on veggies more often than fruit because they have less sugar.0

I eat sugars, and probably more than I should, and most of them are fruit sugars from unprocessed fruit.I make sure my carbs, proteins, and fats are in something approaching reasonable balance, and the fruit is not interfering with my caloric deficit in any way I can see - I'm still losing weight.
I have reduced my fruits somewhat, but I still routinely go over my sugar allotment with mostly unprocessed fruit sugar, and I still routinely lose weight.
It may not be optimal, but the fruits also come with nutrients I like, and I simply enjoy fruit. There are other sugars I've already given up, and I don't feel the need nor the desire to give up more.0 -
Breast milk is made for a fast growing baby, their nutritional needs are different than an adult.
I'm new here, so i didn't know that you could look that up, forgive me. What was her percentage of calories from fat, BTW?
The weight i lost was from a variety of factors, and you are correct, one of them was indeed less calories. There were also other factors that are unrelated to fat consumption, too, like increased water consumption, removing all food chemicals from my diet, exercise, and other factors.
And again, i totally agree that fats are healthy in an appropriate dose, and i told you that i think an appropriate dose is less than 10% of your calories from fat. You haven't told me yet what you think an appropriate dose is.
The Mayo Clinic recomedation is 20% to 35% of daily calories and they refer to that as a healthy limit. They base that on D.O.A. statistics which at least have some research behind them. I would be more inclined to the higher half of that range given that the fats are from healthy sources with abundant Omega 3 fatty acids. Quite honestly, I think 10% is unhealthy and far too low. So again, I'd ask what data do you have from a peer reviewed source that would support your recommedation other than your own anecdotal thoughts?0 -
Overall, I think that being aware of added sugars is a good thing. However, I have been diagnosed as prediabetic (and also had gestational diabetes) and have talked with doctors and dieticians. They have all talked about guidelines for total carbs rather than sugar specifically. I even asked at my last appointment and was told to just pay attention to carbs. Each carb choice is roughly 15g of carbs. I am supposed to stick to less than 12 carb choices per day. Preferably I would have 2 for breakfast, 3-4 at lunch and dinner and one for each snack. I personally think that fruit has great nutritional value and don't think it should be eliminated. However, don't go overboard and eat 8 servings a day. To me, your 3 sounds good. Round out your diet with some veggies and protein and you are good.0

This thread highlights an important point that needs highlighting. The body is pretty much capable of getting energy from many sources, and many people have had great success by reducing SPECIFIC sources more than others. Low fat, low carb, etc.
It also highlights another important point - a lot of different things work. Maybe some better than others, maybe some with fewer long-term negative effects than others, but nearly all of them healthier than continuing to be overweight as long as you aren't completely eliminating a specific energy source or taking a magic pill.
And, of course, the final point. People eating at a deficit tend to be a crabby lot, don't we? :flowerforyou:0 -
Hey, I'm prediabetic, never been gestational diabetic. For the last week been paying attention to carbs and they have been lower then my goal, but my blood sugar kept going rollercoaster. so I started looking at sugars and this week plan on keep carbs, calories, sodium and sugars all low and see if that helps with my blood sugar. This is so hard.0

If you mean about 30% - thanks, yes I will0 -
Between the whole thing with fats and the idea that sugar is converted into fat by glycogen (which I'm shocked noone has commented on), this thread is full of fail.
A basic scientific overview of fats, carbs (which includes sugar), glycogen, and how these affect body fat:
http://www.nature.com/oby/journal/v9/n11s/full/oby2001128a.html
One key quote in the article:
> It has been postulated that conversion of glucose into fatty acids on high-CHO diets raises energy expenditure, but this does not apply because it is now well-established that lipogenesis is negligible under normal conditions (12).
If you take nothing else away from it, it is the fact that a normally funtioning human being, of which 99.99%+ of people are, coversion of carbs to fat virtually never occurs at a statistically significant level. Your carb intake affects your fat burning rate, that is it. Carbs are NOT converted to fat. EVER. This is well established scientifically, anybody that says otherwise has no idea of what they are talking about. (there are extreme circumstances where this can occur, but we can safely assume that if you are here trying to lose weight, this does not apply to you, as you aren't taking in the level of carbs where poising becomes a real threat and the body has to use its emergency coutermeasures (which is to convert the glucose to fat)).0 -
i even specifically asked about the fact they're converted into fat by glycogen hahah, cranky dieters!0
