Pilates Reformer classes?

So at my gym they offer this where you do pilates on a machine. But everything I read says it will take 10 classes to feel a difference, 20 to see it and 30 to have a whole new body -- is that just if you are doing pilates? as it recommended to do it 2-3 times a week
The class at the gym only meets once a week for 8 weeks, each class is about one hour (when you minus adjusting the machine for exercises and all it is probably 45-50 of workout)
If I do cardio like the elliptical for atleast 30 minutes twice a week - will I see results sooner. I only have about 10 more pounds to loose but I really should tone. I know the reformer class will help with my abs, nothing else I seem to feel the workout there but even after the first class i did - for 2 days I was tender!! not hurt -- just noticed tenderness. (I had a c-section so this area has been hard to flatten and loose fat in)
Anyone taken a reformer class at the gym thats once a week?
Suggesstions? I need to tone but I am not overly into weight machines at the gym. I wouldnt mind trying some at home exercises where you use your body (like plank, hand weights when walking...)
I am about 5' 2" and just kinda flabby - mostly my belly -- its like a round ball right where my son sat that I have hard time flattening. And my under arms bother me, that flab that waves when you wave! those are my top 2 areas of concern..
