Decline Bench Press - back muscles are sore?

Hello all -- Monday was chest/tris day at the gym, and my bf and I did the decline bench press. I did lift heavier than normal, but I had proper form, as he was spotting me to make sure. HOWEVER, a couple hours after the work out on Monday, my back/shoulder muscles in my upper back area were/are EXTREMELY sore, it's not unbearable just very uncomfortable.. it doesn't feel like a pulled muscle, just some strange soreness. I guess the muscles I'm talking about would be the traps area (closer to the middle of my back like my spine area) and inner lats.
My question is, has anyone experienced this from decline bench presses?? Is it normal muscle soreness or should I take it super easy on the weights until it's not sore any longer? Thanks for any help.
