Excercise Diary Q Re Zumba

Hello everyone
I am fairly new around here and keeping pretty quiet til I get to know the place, but now I have a question so I come to all you wonderful people for your idea on the answer
Tonight I am going to my first Zumba class!! I am so excited, i was taking hip hop classes just for fun but they are done for the summer and not really structured as a workout...and I love dance and this looks so fun I wont even care that it's an amazing workout!!!! [for those not familiar Zumba Dance is a blending of Latin and International music dance themes, The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.]
My question is, in adding it as a new exercise for my diary since it doesn't exist in the database how many calories should I put it burns on average??
I looked up aerobics in the database
general = 655 cal burned
high impact = 709 i think it said
and from reading up on zumba this is what I have seen as far as calorie burning from people in my weight range who went to a class wearing HRMs.
***
"I wear a heart rate monitor to each class I teach and burn anywhere from 500-800 calories in a 60 minute class. I'm 5'7" and 192.6 pounds. "
AND
"I'm 5'7", 250lbs and my heart rate monitor says I burn between 700-900 calories each class. Best. Workout. Ever."
***
I myself am 5'7 and 222 lbs right now. So going between those two [and several other similar posts] I was going to put 700 cal for 60 minutes.
Does that sound about right to everyone?
Thanks in advance for your input!

What I read on this says 600-700 per hour.0

I would go for the lower end of the range (600-700) at least at first so that you give yourself time to learn the moves. That way you won't risk over-estimating the number that you burn, especially if you choose to eat your exercise calories.
I love Zumba! I hope you like it too. Good luck!0 -
Well, ive never done a Zumba class but i have done a dance type of class and I burned about 250 cals for 25mins. ( there were also higher intervals in that class with jumping and salsa moves)
I weigh in the 190's and im 5'3
so you could say 600-700 cals for an hour at your weight would be about right.
hth's:flowerforyou: Have fun!0 -
Thanks everyone
thats about what I thought too, sticking to the lower end of the range
I am so excited, I am pretty sure I am going to love it, even if I struggle through the first class or so learning the moves as it's a drop in type ongoing class so everyone will be at different levels...
wish me luck! let you know how it goes:glasses:0 -

Crap! That's disappointing!
But yes, let us know...... posting here is really fun & addicting BTW!
There was a new Zumba class starting at my gym right after my TKB (turbo kick boxing) Monday.
No way could I do both! Especially in the current heat wave. :explode:
Glad to know about the calories burned. I've been using 'high impact aerobics' for TKB.
There are also listing under 'Dancing" that may fit?0
