My husband just started Bariatric Treatment with his doctor. He has a protein shake for breakfast. Lunch is a salad with lots of veggies and two hard boiled eggs. Two snacks one piece of fruit and one cheese stick. Dinner is 5 oz of lean protein 2 cups of veggies and a salad. I have put all of this in and it comes to just 1000 calories. They also want him at the gym 3-4 times a week... My husband is 5'11 and 385 pounds. This does not seem like enough food to me. Won't he eventually go into starvation mode.. Any responses would be greatly appreciated..

You should probably ask his doctor, not strangers on the internet.0

He should speak with the Doctors. If I'm correct he is doing this diet as a temporary way to quickly lose some weight?
If so, it's ok for small periods of time and he is under the guidance of a medical team.0 -
Way too little for a guy his size. It's too little for a hundred and fifty pound person. You really need to take him to a doctor, they will be able to give him a plan. Btw, what's it say he should eat According to mfp? I'd bet somewhere between 2,800 to 3,500 with losing 2 lbs a week set. It is very dangous for him to eat that little. Starvation mode would be the least of my worries.
Sorry, did not realize that this was set up by a doctor. A second opinion wouldn't hurt, it still seems Very, very low to me.0 -
This is being done with a bariatric specialist. Maybe now_or_never is right about it only being temporary. I'll have to find out.0

I assume he is checking in with the medical team so they can follow his progress and health during this time.0 -
LiddyBit. Really if you have nothing constructive to say don't reply.0

I suspect, although please just ask the question to your hubbys doc, that they want him to lose some weight rather quickly given his size. He falls in to the "obese" category at that weight. And, although that is a low amount of calories, you can drop some weight quickly with this plan. Then, I bet, they will put him on a more well rounded plan that allows him to continue to lose weight more slowly.0

Speak with his doctor's if you are worried. No offense to this site or anyone on here, but bariatric procedures are more advanced than most people have knowledge of. Even in my years in the medical field, I have limited exposure to this. My father recently had the surgery however, and I can tell you that it does seem like they eat very little. In my father's case, this was because his stomach was so much smaller, that he could only eat very small amounts at a time.
But here's a reminder, this is an extreme procedure! If you ate over 2,000 calories like some people suggested to lost around 2 lbs a week...well then do that and don't go through the bariatric procedure! Listen to the advise of your husband's doctors and if you don't feel as though you get a satisfactory response, then seek a second opinion, not one of strangers that have no experience with the situation.
Again, no offense to anyone...but this is definitely a situation to be answered by medical professionals.0 -
My husband is not actually having any type of surgery. He is trying to lose while working with a Bariatric Specialist.0

Either way, the advice of a specialist is more important than that of strangers...and it's still an extreme situation0 -
I know there are a lot of opinions concerning weight loss and even professionals cannot always agree.
I suspect because of his size and risk factors, lower calories is the lesser of two evils.
Even small drops in weight can make significant health improvements in a relatively short time frame. I would not even worry about starvation mode (if such a thing truly exists) at this stage.
I think we are perhaps getting hung up on caloric intake verses the dangers of being morbidly obese. My guess is they feel he needs to shed some pounds rather quickly.
If he is monitored closely he is probably in good hands.... There are risks involved in these types of things regardless.
Don't rule out a second opinion if you are worried and make sure he communicates very clearly how he is feeling.
I wish you and your husband the best in this.0
