Running Downhill and Hill debate with my husband.

I've been running without pain since February and I started in January. I was running 6 miles and it is a route I've run repeatedly with now problems, this run and many of my others have hills. I normally just run short steps down the hill because I always felt like my ankles would give out. It turns out that my 'wisdom' of running as quickly as I could down the hill has left me with mega-sore upper leg mucsles.
I of course googled 'running down hill' and come to find out that is not the correct way to run down hill. I didn't run today, but tomorrow is supposed to be my long run day and I am not excited whatsoever, so I went and mapped out the flattest 10 mile course I could find in my area.
Side Story:
I have a 10 mile route and according to my GPS the thing is almost all uphill, and then at the very end there is a very steep down hill stretch (about 3/4 of a mile down). I've run this route three times and the last time I tell my husband, 'the route is all up hill", he says to me "there is no way it is mostly uphill, you'd have the same elevation increase and decrease from beginning to end. We argued ( funny argument), for about 30 minutes, I even showed him the runkeeper and he still thinks he's right that it would be the same amount. I still think I'm right.
Does anyone else have a route where the majority of it is an uphill run with a steep down hill at then end? I feel like this route gives me a more difficult run than a route that would have even up and down hill elevations, or even a flat course... any thoughts?
