Totally Embarrassed: What Happened?

OK....so, I planned to lose 1.5 pounds per week and reach my goal at the end of Sept/Oct. So, last week when I woke up on Wed. I weighed myself and I was at 121 and I thought whoa.....how could I have lost 6 pounds in one week....THEN, today I weighed 125.5 (yes, I double checked it on my digital scale). BUT, I had splurged last Friday night - could I have gained back 4.5 pounds from one splurge. So, I was far more realistic to think 1.5 per week and if I started July 4th at 131, I should be satisfied at 125.5, right, wrong. I am embarrassed. Anyone else with stories like this? Thanks for reading this and stay focused and don't splurge with excitement too soon like I had done HA!

Ummm... I'm not sure you gained 4.5 in one splurge. Wowza- must've been a big splurge  , some folks on here know how many extra calories you would have to eat to gain 4.5 pounds, I don't tho.... Perhaps there was a water weight situation. That happens to the best of us.

But hey, congrats on the loss you did achieve. Don't be embarrassed, you should only be embarrassed if you gave up, and you didn't. Kudos on that!

Your weight can naturally fluctuate and there could also be some water retention. Also, at 125lbs losing 1.5lbs per week to get down to 110 lbs may not be realistic.

Anyways, I know the fluctuations can be frustrating. I think looking at the monthly trend may be more accurate, especially when you are close to your goal.

    Good luck:flowerforyou:

3500 calories equal 1 lb......if you gained 4.5 lbs, you ate 15750 cals OVER your daily amount your SUPPOSED to eat.....

I'm thinking it was probably water weight or something like that.....if the food was real salty (like chinese, or japenese or mexican food) it could just be the sodium causing your body to retain water......the solution, drink even EXTRA water to the 64 ozs we should all be drinking everyday anyway!

FYI::: this is strictly MY opinion, I'm not a doctor, and I certainly am not very smart about all this weightloss, so I could very well be wrong...this is just things I have learned from reading on here from other people......but I DO know 3500 cal = 1 lb....that is factual!

Hi Kat - Realistic....well, I am only 5'3.5 inches tall/short.....so, why don't you think it is realistic????? I would actually be happy at 115. Thanks for your note.

You'd have to have eaten an EXTRA 15,750 calories to put on 4.5 pounds. Probably not the case. Could be that there was a lot of sodium in your splurge that is making you hold on to a bunch more water?

If your splurge included alcohol, that could be a problem. My weight always goes up a couple of pounds if I have had a couple of drinks

The alcohol comment is a good point.

I'm by no means an expert and I had no idea how tall you were. And I have no idea what type of build you are. I was just pointing out that 1.5lbs per week is particularly aggressive for someone at 125lbs and will be very hard to achieve.

I just had another thought. Do you eat all of your calories every day? If not, I'm just wondering if that could have contributed to the sudden increase. If you have been under eating and thus have a slow metabolism a sudden very large splurge could have a significant impact .

I think the comment about unrealistic was the amount of weight per week. I seems to be harder to drop weight at a fast pace when you have less to lose.

I don't think she meant that your weight GOAL wasn't realistic but that at this current weight you're at to lose 1.5 lbs per week is a long stretch, often the closer you get to your goal, the harder it is to lose those last pounds where as if you had say 50 to lose they probably came off easier in the beginning then the last 10

The comments about wanting to lose 1.5 a week are correct. That will be very hard if not impossible to do. I would change it to 1 or even a half pound per week. That is a more realistic goal.

Now onto wanting to be 110. I'm only going to tell you about me. I am 48 and 5ft 2in, 120lbs. A couple of years ago I got to 115. I walked and really watched what I ate. I still had a pouchy belly. Then I gained almost 15 when DH came home from Iraq. As I lost that time I did some running and strength training. When I got to 120 DH told me I looked better at 120 than at 115. I am more toned, have less belly. My clothes even fit better. I say this so you don't get set on a number on the scale. Those numbers can be very deceiving. Which you are finding out thise week. At any given time they can be up, down and up again. Either use a tape measure, have your body fat % checked or find a pair of pants and use them to judge.

You might be able to get to 110 but you might want to look at that goal as you start to tone up and lose body fat. You might be surprised to find out you don't have to get that low to look really good!

Thanks Keiko for such wise advice and everyone else! There are so many kind and wise people using myfitnesspal. Keiko, I guess you are all right about trying to be realistic - esp. since I am not a real small bone person. I am fortunate in that my husband never tells me I need to lose wt., just wants me to be healthy and I am to this point, thank the Lord! By the way, I grew up on a farm and to this day, my parents still have gorgeous hollyhocks like I see in your photos!

    Thanks everyone!
