Dessert is NOT my friend

I started using MFP in November 2010 and lost a net of 68 pounds in the process. I've managed to maintain in the 150s for a year.

My problem is this:

When I was actively losing weight it was a thrill to get on the scale each day and see that number get lower and lower. I had an actual reward for my good behavior and, as such, I stayed away from all the food that made me gain weight in the first place.

Slowly but surely, though, over the last year I've told myself over and over that I can eat this or I can eat that because (1) I'm not trying to lose weight anymore and (2) I eat this garbage and somehow the next day the scale doesn't reflect a substantial weight gain.

I felt better when I wasn't eating processed food, caffeinated drinks, SALT, etc., and I know that I will feel better again if I stop now.

How have you been able to work up a second wind of willpower to take care of yourself the way you know you should?

Has it been daunting to know that cookies really are a gateway drug and if you intend on making this a true lifestyle change you are going to have to be faithful with eating right?

Any words of wisdom is appreciated :)

We don't just diet to get into good shape...we change our lifestyle so that we stay in good shape.

Having said that, it's okay to have a cheat day once a week to enjoy your desserty type of goodies. Just don't over-indulge.
  • Maybe try weighing once a week so that you will see the cumulative effect of what you are eating. Usually I can be lax for a week with no real gain (Maybe half a pound), but week 2 it is noticeable. phinphanbill is right though, you have to make room for the indulgences sometimes or you're setting yourself up for failure.
