Protein Bars.....not really a new subject

I'm going to GNC this afternoon and would like to get some protein bars, now I'll be looking for low carb, low fat, and preferably the lowest sugar.......What I need to know from anyone that has purchased any from GNC is........which ones actually taste good?
For those that think I should make my own, I'm not above it and consider myself fairly intelligent, (we have an organic health food store here) tell me how to make them. I know I can put in what I like, but how do I keep it "glued" together....so to speak.
Thanks for your input.

If you want low carb, low fat, why not just grab some protein powder? To my knowledge all of the bars are going to at least have a fairly high amount of carbs. I'll see if I can find the recipe that was posted a looooooooooooooooooooong time ago on how to make protein bars.0

Homemade Protein Bar recipe - 8 servings
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 1/2 cup protein powder (chocolate works well)
1/4 cup natural peanut butter (NO SUGAR ADDED)
1 cup skim milk powder
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and add enough water to make a stiff dough
--you will have to get your hands dirty to mix it up; it's sticky.
Spray an 8x8 inch cake pan with Pam and press in dough evenly.
Refrigerate a few hours to harden, then cut into 8 - 12 bars, depending on requirements.
Wrap bars in plastic wrap & store in fridge
I used to make this one. It's not too bad and is fairly easy.0 -

Protein Powder is fine, just didn't know what to put it in, I've never used it and from everything I've read it's seems a bit confusing as to which kind.0 -
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Chocolate is a safe bet available at GNC for around $22 (smaller container).0

I love cooking so "dirty" hands are not a problem....lol. Thank you both for your help, I'll have to call the organic store to see if they sell protein powder also that way maybe I can kill two birds with one stone........so to speak.0

I use EAS Carb Advantage bars. 230 calories, 25 carbs - 5 fiber, 8 fat, 17 protein, 2 sugar. I usually eat half before my workout and half after.0

Okay, yes they sell protein powders too.......now the adventure begins......whey, egg white, soy, and so on......I told them that I'd have to evaluate them and see.0

Are there differences between those types (whey, soya, egg white, etc.) other than the obvious? Do they affect your system differently, have distinct bnefits? I've only ever tried one type of protein powder (whey, in a shake) and it tasted so aweful I couldn't get it down, but I've been considering trying a different kind. I too am worried about th carb content, though. I often go over my carb limit by a good 60g!! (I'm on a 1200 cal limit though...)0

Detour Bars are pretty good. You can get big ones at GNC or smaller ones at Costco.
Optimum Nutrition Protein powder is good quality protein and very low in carbs. Mixes well in water, can also use milk if you want but then you are adding in some extra carbs and calories.0 -

Your body breaks down the different kinds of protein at different rates. Whey can be broken down and used pretty fast, casien protein (found in dairy products) takes much longer to break down. So whey protein is usually recommended pre and post workout and casien protein is recommended for night so your body can break it down over night and it will keep your muscles from breaking down. Actually there are many kinds of protein and they break down any where from fast, medium and slow. You can buy protein powder that has some of each actually.0 -
I ended up with the chocolate whey powder, it had the most protein and less carbs, sugar, and fat than the others. I definitely won't be shopping at a natural/organic food store again too soon, killed a $50 bill and didn't get a whole hell of a lot........However, I did get to try one of those Luna bars and let me tell you I would take one of those over a snickers any day! Hubby really liked it too.0

Atkins makes a protien bar that is really low in carbs. Maybe 5g per bar, or something like that. I haven't had one in a while so I don't remember. They are good though.0

I am a big fan of the Clif Bar Builder Bars. Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Cookies and Cream are all good. 270 cal, 20g protein roughly per bar. Very good taste.
I also use Optimum Nutrition Protein Powder Extreme Milk Chocolate in a couple of different ways. I actually mix one scoop with 1/2 cup milk with my morning coffee to make my own version of a Coffee Mocha with 22g of Protein and no added sugar. (Immersion Blender works very well). I also take 8 oz milk and 8 oz of water with one scoop and a couple of ice cubes and blend up a nice post workout protein shake.
I am planning on trying my hand at the homemade protein bars that were listed earlier in this post tonight.
Good Luck.0
