Star Wars/LOTR - Epic Status

My husband and I had a fight yesterday about whether LOTR is an epic like Star Wars. Hubby said Star Wars is an epic while LOTR is just a great movie series where I said that Tolkien is a genius, the books came out before Lucas even thought of Star Wars, and that the movies should have the same epic status as Star Wars. So...

Who's right?

Also, I am open to friend requests! We are also into 80's cartoons (Thundercats, GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, She-Ra,etc...) and love Sci-Fi. yup, we're geeks!

they're both epics as we currently understand the word. however:
    ep·ic
       [ep-ik] Show IPA

    adjective Also, ep·i·cal.
    1.
noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.

    2.
resembling or suggesting such poetry: an epic novel on the founding of the country.

    3.
heroic; majestic; impressively great: the epic events of the war.

    4.
of unusually great size or extent: a crime wave of epic proportions.

movies are not currently in the actual definition of "epic", whereas novels have been for over a century.

therefore, Star Wars cannot technically be an epic. just awesome.
