High sugar intake hindering weight loss?

I know there have been topics on this posted, and the responses are all over the map, but I've recently been noticing that my sugars are consistently going way over the allowed limit, even when I have a good day (I'll admit there are some not-so-good sugars on there!) I know this is a combo of refined sugars, things like lactose, etc etc.
Anyway, has anyone focused on reducing overall sugar intake and noticed a big difference in energy and weight loss? By this I not only mean refined sugars, but fruit sugars as well? What kinds of things have you eliminated?
Thanks in advance!! :-)
