I have never been one to use protein bars, but my meal plan is suggesting them. I don't know much about them. Are they good/bad as far as snacks or meal replacements go. They are specifically saying Pure Protein bars which I am assuming means a brand. I am looking to burn fat and loose weight. I do not want to bulk my muscles. I am clueless. Any advice would be greatly appreciated:)
Thank You

I ate these all the time when I was doing CrossFit and loved them. They went on sale every other week at the grocery store near me for $1 each. These were better than other protein bars that I saw because for the calorie content they had a good amount of protein WITHOUT a ton of sugar...a lot of the bars will have a super high sugar content.

Yes, Pure Protein is a brand of protein bar, fairly common ones. And not too bad seeing as they actually have more proteins than carbs.

And don't believe the hype about bulking. A woman bulking (without the use of steroids) is a myth; a very well perpetuated one.

Yummy! I used to use them to try and bump up my protein intake. I did not find myself particularly satiated on them, though, so I tended to overeat if I started with a protein bar. Set my brain for candy bar, I think, and then I couldn't recover. They taste good for protein bars, though.

What meal plan requires you to eat protein bars? You could always substitute with real food that hit the macros and calories. But yes, pure protein is the brand name. I used to eat those a lot.

And you won't bulk up... I have been eating at a surplus and it has taken me a while just to put on 5 pounds. It's not easy for women to bulk..

Protein Bars can tricky, you have to pay attention to the labels. What meal plan are you using? Protein will not make you bulk up, we all need protein. Here are a few quick protein packed snacks you can pair with fruit, veggies or nuts

    Plain Greek Yogurt 18g protein

    Cottage Cheese

    2 Hard Boiled Eggs

I am doing the Curves Complete program. I have the option of changing things and choosing another from the list. But for example, next week Mon.-Sun. I have a total of 4 protein bars. I wasn't sure if that quantity would hinder me. Thank you everyone for the info!

I was a little skeptical about these bars at first since Wal*Mart carries them. lol But I did a quick search on the bodybuilding forums, and a lot of the weight trainers are pleased by the amount of protein. I also liked that the calories are relatively low considering the amount of proteins and carbs that are packed into each bar, which is due in part to containing sugar alcohols to prevent your body from digesting a portion of the carbohydrates. If you check out the following link, the S'mores flavor seems to be a popular.

I have personally tried the Chocolate Deluxe and the Chocolate Peanut Butter versions. They have sort of a "plasticy" texture, like you're eating a firm bar of Playdoh, and they curbed my appetite for about 30 minutes.

As far as advice, you're going to get a mixed bag from everyone, so it's going to be your choice in the end. Personally, I would treat this more as one of your snacks in between meals, and not as a meal replacement bar due to the lack of nutrients it contains.

    Good luck!

That sounds strange that they would suggest you eating so many bars rather than just real food. Most plans I ever see advise against processed food bars. I eat protein bars as a convienient way of getting my candy fix and protein at the same time but not replacing my meals very frequently.

Well goodluck! My favorite pure protein bars were the caramel and peanut butter. The smores is actually pretty good...and the peanut nugget. Lol. Maybe I should just say they all were good. I stick to quest bars and the occasional supreme protein bar now.

I find them very filling as a quick snack when I'm extremely busy! (work). Also Calories are reasonable. 4 per week isn't that much!

I prefer protein shakes, but I always have them on hand, along with some nuts and dried fruit, for days when I'm running constantly with the kids and I know a proper meal is likely out of the question :)

I'm super busy and often I use protein bars as meals on the go. I like clif builder bars although they are high in sugar. My new favorite are calle "purefit" bars and they are gluten free, dairy free, gmo free, don't melt and are less sugar than comparable brands.

I love Pure Protein bars. I probably eat too many, but they are so easy to eat on the go and, because I eat very little meat, they are a way to get protein in.

I would not recommend the s'mores - IMO. I like the chocolate delux and chocolate peanut butter. Some types have more sugar than others, so make sure you compare the lables.

To be honest, I use protein bars like candy bars. I have half of one after my lunch as a sweet treat that doesn't make me want to hang myself for breaking my good eating habits.

For protein fuel I prefer doing it the food route, so chicken, turkey, eggs etc.

Shakes are good though. I add the powder to my porridge and try to have one after a workout to ease the next day aches.

In the grand scheme of protein bars I think these are reasonable in terms of macros.

I also think they taste good although I very seldom eat protein bars only because I'd rather spend those calories on whole foods.

Kroger always has them for a buck apiece. I eat them daily and would have a hard time meeting my protein/calorie requirements without them. They taste great and they're filling.

i have read the back labels of every protein bar in the world and the Pure is the only one i can find that has the protein i need with the lowest amount of carbs & sugar. i LOVE them. they are like candy to me. i eat about 4 per week, after i work-out.

I eat them. The strawberry cream (I think that's the flavor) are the best tasting bar, hands down, that I have EVER eaten. There are bars with more protein but with WAY higher calories and there are some with lower calories without as much protein. It's the best overall as far as numbers go.

I have one almost every day. The chocolate peanut butter taste great and I also add a little natural peanut butter on top for even better taste. What's even better about them is the kids can't stand them so I don't have to worry about them disappearing when I'm not home.

I'm not a big fan of protein bars in general due to the fact that they tend to be very high in carbs and calories and not that great protein per calorie ratio. However, Pure Protein bars are actually very good in this regard. Not that much sugar, good amount of protein, good amount of carbs, good taste and a very good value.

I eat 2 bars for breakfast 3-4 days per week and it's a quick 40g of protein and keeps me full until lunch. $1 a bar is hard to beat as well and I get them cheaper than that sometimes. Real food is better, but I travel a lot and if I want to have a breakfast sometimes this is the best option.
  • These are my go-to when I fail to prep properly ;) They're the best bang for your buck, IMO. Low in sugar and high in protein, A+!
