Sugar vs Sugar Alcohol

So I started keeping an eye on my sugar intake 36grams daily ( I write it down to account for it) but I notice something called sugar alcohol. Google explains it as "what gives certain flavor to most stuff"...i.e sugar free. For example...today I looked into sugar free syrup...cool "0" sugar but the sugar alcohol was 13grams per serv...almost half my allowance. Does anyone know do I account for this (sugar alocohol) in my daily allowance?
