Eyes in a dark room using a computer

Hey Guys,

My boss pretty much insists on living like a vampire at work and because I sit directly infront of him it means I'm constantly in darkness at work and I use a computer 8 hours a day in that environment.

My question is, are my eyes getting damaged doing this? I know it makes you strain a bit but does it actually cause damage i.e. will my eyesight deteriorate?

No idea hun. I dont think computers are the best for eyes in any environment. Dont they recommend a break of 15mins every hour?

As for darkness, I would say your eyes adjust to the dark pretty well, so not sure if that would make a difference. Sometimes I feel more comfortable with the lights off when I'm using my computer :noway:

If you're worried, you really need to contact your optician for an expert POV :flowerforyou:

Yeah I think I will get it checked out. The only reason I'm noticing it is because it's really dark in here all day then I go out for my lunch into the sunshine and I have to walk to the supermarket with my head down because I can't look up the sun is too bright. Takes a good 10 mins for me to get used to it and it hurts my eyes a bit. I'm sure it can't be good for them.

Well nearly everything I've read has told me to use a screen in a well lit room, so there has to be something to it. Personally I get a headache if I'm front of the computer too long with too little light.
  • Try dimming your monitor when it's dark inside. Sometimes we work with only half the lights on in my office because ours are really bright to the point where they can be bothersome. When we go with half-light I dim my monitor and it makes it much easier to work with that way. Don't forget to give your eyes a little break on a regular basis!

I used to do VDU assesments at work and you should have adequate diffused lighting when using a computer, in other words if natural daylight is too bright then the blinds should be drawn but the ceiling lights should be on and give you a decent amount of light. It is not advisable to use one in the dark/semi dark as the contrast is too bright.

Everyone in an office using a computer should have regular VDU assesments to ensure they are using the computer correctly and that they have sufficient light, adjustment, chair, and desk height to work i comfort and safety. If the company does not provide these assesments and someone suffers eyestrain/repetative strain injury or back problems due the work station not being set up correctly they can leave themselves open to a health claim.

At least that is how it is in the UK

    Hope this helps :flowerforyou:
