Hi there, i'm 20 years old. Used to just coming home after work, having a nap and then getting up and watching tv/internet. Whats the best way to start getting used to doing exercise. Should i start gradually and work up or just go all in???

Does anyone know the best exercises to do. I love dancing, swimming and walking. Not a fan of running. Which exercises will help me burn the most fat? I have recently gone swimming after work but I need more... I just need to get my brain used to exercising frequently. I need to be healthier, please can anybody give me any advice. I would greatly appreciate it.

Kirst xoxo

    Sure. Quit being lazy.

There's no magic solution. It is hard work and doing things you might not necessarily like doing (lookin' at you, front squats). I suggest finding a form of cardio that you love (swimming isn't quite the best choice, dance/walking/biking/running would likely be better) and then pick a good lifting program (I LOVE New Rules of Lifting for Women and Starting Strength). Then do those and eat well. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Question all the advice you get (including mine) and do your own research. Ignore all the "quick-fixes" like body wraps and hollywood cookie soup diets.

    It's science, not magic.

Commit yourself to it and don't give up when you screw up. Everyone does, but not everyone keeps going.

I had trouble starting too. I set a small (but obtainable) weekly goal of 90 minutes and logged it in. I keep a monthly spreadsheet now, but you can just write it on a calendar. Then after you get "used to" the 90 minutes ... add 30 more, and so on.

Eventually this becomes habit. I come home after work & do a workout. Finding something you enjoy doing is key. I rented DVDs from Netflix .... hundreds available ... and found lots of instructors I really like.

10 Minute Solutions offers more than a dozen DVDs (dance, pilates, yoga, kickboxing) There is instant streaming on Netflix for these (each has 5 - 10 minute workouts). Get started by doing a 10 or 20 minute session. You'll find you're enjoying it after awhile.

    Here are some ideas:

-find a workout buddy, someone you can exercise with weekly (or daily)
-pick aerobic activities that you like (basketball, tennis, walking, etc.)
-get a dog and go for long walks
-try new activities (people rave about zumba, for example)
-commit to getting some kind of activity every day for one month (how good you feel at the end of the month should be added motivation!)
-reward yourself with new earrings (or something) if you make your goal of working out daily for a whole month
-read about the positive affects of regular activity on your overall and future health
-don't talk yourself out of getting activity!

    Good luck!

You know what worked for me?

Well, I bought a treadmill but no it;s not about the machine itself. I started doing it, after 3 times I was so bored just walking there for mins...until I got a weird idea "Can I put my pc over the board"? Yeah I could, what for? Watch downloaded series or videos...

This is what I think you cold do. Exercise while you watch TV/YouTube or whatever. Anything you can get, it's best if it's a machine, in my opinion, because you don't have to 'use your brain' counting reps or deciding what exercise to do next, but just doing the same thing over and over...

While you do a treadmill, elliptical, bicycle or whatever while you do what you like which is watching TV...time will pass so fast you will think 'oh, I've been doing this for X mins.."

It's what worked for me :)

    Good luck!
