I just started training for my first half marathon which will be the Dallas Half in December. Just wonder if anyone else is running this as well or has run it in the past and has any tips.

I'm a newbie to running, so my training schedule has me starting off at 2 miles and super slow but I'm hoping to build up to a level and pace where I can run the whole thing. Any advice is much appreciated!

Congratulations on your decision join the ranks of lunatics running half marathons  (I ran my 3rd last Sunday and am thinking of training for a full marathon).

It takes lots of consistent training and effort and is certainly a challenging distance but the feeling you get crossing that finish line is indescribable.

    Training tips
    - train consistently, run 3 or 4 times per week
    - listen to your body and don't try to rush your progress
    - soreness is not unusual but acute pain is, don't try to tough it out through an injury
    - hydrate before, during (at least during your longer runs) and after your runs
    - nothing new in the days leading up to race day - the time to experiment with nutrition, sports drinks etc is during your training
    - replace your shoes as needed (every 300 to 500 miles) and don't buy a brand new pair for the race, even though properly fitting shoes shouldn't need 'breaking in" you want to have a few miles on a pair before race day to avoid any surprises.

    Most important - Have fun!
