Personal trainers

For me, the start of my weight loss journey was kicked off by seeing a PT 3 days per week for around 3 months. I shed around 40 lbs in that time which occured through a combination of a hardcore workout routine (outdoor cross training) and adopting the Fit for Life diet.

I am so glad that I chose to make the commitment to see a PT as I did rather than trying to figure out weight loss principles on my own. I dont think i wouldve achieved the same results otherwise. Some sessions were really very grueling but I pushed through.

Did your weight loss journey start by seeing a personal trainer? What was your experience?

Mine did.. and I still see one.

By using a PT I lost 30 pounds, 6 sizes and got into strength training.. Something I never would have done if I had not seen a PT.

I'm at my goal weight now, but I'm still trying to lose a bit more body fat and get more defined.. which my PT is helping with.

Until I reach my happy point, I will continue to see a PT... and hopefully still get great results.

At one point I was seeing one (had to stop because I couldn't afford it anymore). I think it really helped to show me what I was capable of doing physically and I still go back to many of those exercises these days.

i started on my own- 2 months of doing treadmill every day for 1-2 hours a session and changing diet. Around the 3rd month I wanted to add weight training so I watched tons of youtube videos on the different types of lifting, diet, body composition, etc.... once felt i was knowledgable enough I started using a trainer. Ive been using him 2-3 times a week for 2 months now. The best thing about having a PT, in my opinion, is having someone there who makes sure you have proper form.

Mine did as well. My gym sets you up with a person trainer once a week for a month for free. They teach you how to use equipment around the gym and you have to commit to coming 3 days a week to stay on the program. A few months later after losing 20lbs I got a new trainer once a week for 5 weeks. This got me using free weights and really getting into strength training. Now I'm pretty much a gym rat and I love going. People at my gym as super nice and its a very welcoming environment.

My loss started last August and it has been slow and steady. I started with a personal trainer and committed for a year with him 3x a week. This has worked very well for me as I'm down 59lbs and have approx another 60 to go. I haven't figured out my final goal yet.

My main reason for engaging a trainer was that I had recent shoulder surgery, I'm in my 40's and have knee issues also. I was also morbidly obese and didn't want to injure myself due to my ignorance of the machines and techniques. I am very pleased now because my form is usually spot on and I am lifting and working with weights multiple times a week, which helps me to burn the fat faster.

The trainer continues to kick my butt every time I go in there. He has learned how to read me and know when I'm starting to hurt, versus my just having issues with the workout. I would NEVER have been able to get the results that I have without the trainer. I am down from a 24 to a 10/12 right now.

This has been such a good experience for me that my daughter has also signed up with the same trainer and we put our time together and have 1 hour sessions 2-3x a week now. My husband also just recently signed up with this trainer and is getting private sessions in order to bulk up as he has no weight to lose. This is great for him because he has started to lose his muscle tone since he hit his 50's.

    This too!

I know that when I do the exercises on my own, I'm not getting injured since my form has been checked out and corrected.

    Good morning !!

My journey to finally loving and being committed to fitness started with a PT. as in, physical therapist. I was fortunate , by sheer luck, ended up doing PT after my knee replacement surgery last year at a facility that has integrated physical therapy and a fitness center/gym. I got to know the folks there and felt comfortable "going where I'd never been before" ..... The back of the gym where the guys and the weights are. My trainer is big burly 6'5" guy named Greg who regularly tries to kill me, but I love him ! I'd tried two others before him, both women. Never clicked with them . I wanted to be pushed and Greg indeed kicks my butt. My point is: find a trainer who can provide you ith what you want ...you are the boss.

Fantastic effort! I stopped seeing my PT (she was really trying to keep me going - $$$) after 3 months because I believed I had the necessary tools to lose the remaining 20 or so lbs that I wanted. I achieved that in the next 12 months, mostly through cardio. I really shouldve started doing more intense resistance training but I felt a little initimidated going into the weights area of my gym. i overcome my fears by myself and now absolutely love it!

    Thats awesome!

I know how expensive PT's are(believe me.. I pay out the *kitten* for mine!) and thats why a lot of people don't use them.. and thats ok.

I'm also a very lazy person, and don't want to put in the effort of setting up my own program.. hence where the PT comes in. Whatever we do in our sessions I repeat on my own.. and that helps with the intimidation factor of the weight room. I also just stick in an IPOD and go.. the music distracts me and then I can't worry about what others think of me.

Same deal here. The programs and videos on Bodybuilding.com really helped me get started on a weight training program thats delivering the results I want. I do agree that a trainer is helpful in showing technique.

I'm just starting to see one. I'm already at the gym 5 times a week, but he's going to help me tweak what I already do, to maximize my workout. Also, I want to get more involved with lifting, and need help with form.
