Skipping meals is HORRIBLE on your body - again it will release stree hormones. Same if you have an irregular sleep pattern. If you go to bed 8pm sometimes and then 2am sometimes, etc...it's messing with your body and brain. Those stress hormones may not cause trouble in a week or two - but if you keep skipping meals for say YEARS these horrible hormones will add up and cause a lot of damage to your brain, and organs.

I so emphatically disagree with you.

If this is an appetite problem rather than true hunger I would recommend upping your exercise levels to buy yourself extra calories to eat. This works really well for me and I only ever feel hungry on days I don't workout. I'm not a snacker but like to have a big dinner at night.

Exercise so you can eat more food. Veggies dont have much calories so go crazy. I wouldnt eat more than 1400 personally though. i did the 1200 and didnt los any weight i went up to 1500 and start losing 1 or 2 lbs a day.

You do not technically lose 1-2 lbs a day. Our bodies fluctuate by up to 5 lbs DAILY. Depending on what is going on in our bodies, organ function, TOM, etc. if you meant a week, that is far more attainable and likely.

I tend to worry about being hungry all the time too. My doctor has previously put me on a 1000 calorie a day diet because I have polycystic ovary syndrome and find it hard to lose weight. I managed to stick to it for a year but when I reached my target weight I relaxed and it all went back on.

    MFP suggested 1200 for me too which I thought would be too much for me to lose weight but I am...very slowly! The big thing that made a difference for me with regards the "hunger fear" was to skip lunch for just one day. I must emphasise that this was a one off as obviously routinely missing meals is not a good idea but....what I realised was that missing a meal for one day will not;
    a) kill me
    b) be significantly painful/uncomfortable
    3) cause me hunger pangs that I am not able to resist if determined!

Since that day I have never missed a meal but have been much more able to resist unnecessary snacks when I think back and realise that, on one day, I didn't eat from breakfast until dinnner and I am still here!

This is really not true. If it is, I would like a link to research that has proved this. I skipped meals ALL THE TIME when I was younger and have no significant long term damage due to this. The myth that you start your metabolism by eating breakfast in the morning has also been debunked.

The problem is with 1200 calories a day is it's just not sustainable! You can eat more and lose weight, there are whole groups on here with women who have done just that, and they are all healthy, happy, athletic and strong. I don't know about you guys, but I want to eat and give my body the best possible advantage so I can work out harder, go longer and get stronger. I don't want to be a skinny girl who can't open a pickle jar!

I dropped the obsession with calorie counting by upping my cals to 2000 per day, not worrying about going hungry because I hadn't done exercise on rest days so hadn't earnt the calories....this is your recovery time, when your body is repairing and getting stronger! You shouldn't be restricting yourself during this process.

Anyway, the point i'm trying to make is that once you stop worrying so much about your calorie intake, you start focusing on the quality of the food you eat, and making the right choices. Whatever has been proved/disproved regarding skipping meals, I don't believe going hours without eating is healthy. You can't play games with your metabolism. I eat 5 times a day, i've done low calorie diets and felt like crap. Now I eat when i'm truly hungry, I love food, love working out and feel amazing for it!

Thanks for all the help guys :)
    (i'm 5ft5" jsuk)

I've upped my intake to 2000 because I've got really important exams this weeks but after I'll drop it to 1800. I try to fit in at least half an hour of exercise a day either jogging or biking or trampolining ;) so thanks for all your advice :D
  • You should drink water. That will help. I was hungry all the time before I started my journey on Mfp...and drinking water fills up cravings and hunger!! :)

ok. I tried the 1200 calories when I started. It DIDN"T work. I'm 51 and I eat over 2000 calories a day. I eat a LOT. One of these days I'll keep track. I haven't done that for awhile. When I first started losing I did 1500-1900 most days but I upped my activity level. I made myself walk at least an hour a day. As I got more in shape the more I fit into that hour. Now I'm a runner. Look at your activity level and try to make healthier choices in your eating and screw what they say about counting calories and special diets. Also you need both good carbs for energy (I eat a ton of carbs... and some not so healthy) You also need protein to rebuild muscle from the activity.

Oh yeah. They're right about water. Drink a lot of it. Skip the sodas, no juice, eat fruit instead.

Catch you later! Time for a run. : )
