While I congratulate your success, neglecting to train/strengthen your core is rather ridiculous. Your abdomen does a lot more for your body than just sit there and look pretty.

What do you think compound lifts work?
True but not to a great extent.0 -

How do they not work your core to a pretty high degree? (I am talking about core in general here)0 -
Obviously you haven't had babies LOL!
Believe me, I have to train my abs. They are now weak from 2 full term pregnancies.
Maybe for men this works, but not for me and probably not a lot of moms.0 -
I can't tell if serious or not , but it's different for everybody.
Na being serious... everyone I know has stopped training there abs. As long as you have correct technique then you wont have have any issues gaining abs...
Your still engaging your ab muscles if your using proper technique.0 -
But like it's been said.... he IS working his core....0

Are you saying heavy Squats and Deadlifts haven't strengthened your core?0 -
I think many of you are missing the point. He IS training his abs, just not directly. His abs are certainly bein worked through the compound lifts. I don't like working the core directly either, but I've got a strong core from running trails, swinging kettlebells, and lifting heavy compound moves in the gym.
Great job OP. Carry on.
^^^this^^^ Because you still engage those muscles.0 -

This is a great way for moms to tighten their core. Especially those that have seperated ab muscles since it is highly recommended not to do traditional crunches if you have this problem.0 -
You have to work your core. Everyone knows that. You make be more "bulky" in the mid section, but I'm not sure that its a good thing. Were you kidding?0

Anytime you engage your abdominal muscles prior to an exercise you are working your core. Especially with lifts.0 -
I'm getting more confused as I read the thread0

The point being made (I believe) is that doing compound lifts work you core (among other things). Your core is made up of your abs, obliques, lower back and diaphram. So when you are doing compound lifts you are working your abs. I think the point also being made is that, as with any exercise, they do not specifically work your abs and to get the 6 pack popping abs, people also need to be doing islolation exercises. Core work is more functional and compound lifts are an effective way of working your core - but it may not be as effective/efficient at getting the asthetics just as isolation exercises are not as efficient at working your core.0 -
Okay....
There is no need for me to endless hours of situps and crunches when I just squat (both front and back) big and dead lift big as long as your technique is correct you are going to activate you core.. I am not saying that everyone has to work like this.. Just showing that you dont need train your abs directly
I also do not train my arms any more. I have not done a bicep curl, tricep pushdown or anything similar for a couple of months now.. My arms are growing... I do compound lifts so I am activating my arms... It means I can go harder and have rest days
also another big thing is people dont strengthen their lower backs which is a huge thing in posture..0 -

I don't do specific ab training either. Only compound lifts such as squats, deadlifts, overhead press. I've had 3 children but am genetically blessed in that I don't carry weight in my stomach, didn't get stretch marks, and don't have a lot of lose skin.0 -
I feel it in my abs after doing squats, dead lifts, standing rev flies & of course push ups. I think crunches are bad for your back, in general. I do planks 2x per week... just because abs are my weak spot and I need a little extra work.0

There you go...confusing everyone with logic!!
I used the OP's terminology. And no, he is not specifically training his abs. I got the point.
Err....ok then.

Sorry, is it a reading comprehension problem?0 -
That's crazy that those guys couldn't do those glute/ham raises.0 -
