Generic - it means without a name brand.

you can call me cranky because i haven't had a freaking sandwich in a month (whatevz) but i'm so unbelievably tired of trying to build my recipes and finding the term "generic" with something like "generic - Jif Honey Nut Peanut Butter"

Jif is a brand name. Please, for the love of all things sacred, when you put something in as "generic" leave it as such.

it takes for-ever to wade through store-bought products to finally get to a whole food. this is half why i stopped logging last year. it starts to get more complicated in the summertime when I'm making almost everything from scratch.

besides, it's not just that, it's all kinds of things. it takes me so long to enter a recipe. thankfully, i eat pretty much the same things all the time.
  • That is frustrating, and really doesn't make any sense.

But I have a legit question... won't the calories and other nutritional information in peanut butter (or whatever other food) be pretty much the same? Even if it's Jif brand or not... I could be wrong so someone please enlighten me.

Usually I just use the first one that pops up if I don't want to be wading through looking forever, I figure it will be close enough.

I'm with you on this one.
I'll type in "generic blah blah thing" and then it gives me "generic-BRAND-thing".

Generic means it has no brand!!!

the other day a girlfriend gave me a thin slice of white chocolate at lunch that she brought back from Amsterdam. omg.. it took me like 5 minutes to just find generic white chocolate.

and not all peanut butters are the same and most name brands add sugar.

it's only 'cuz I eat from scratch more than not. considerably more than not. there are rarely barcodes in my pantry, you know? i even make my own mayonnaise.

so it's a matter of finding the whole food vs. the product; i'm not interested in products unless I make them.

I agree, 100%. It can be very hard to find what you are looking for if you are looking for something that doesn't have a brand name. Or packaging.

If you're trying to add natty pb, I would add something like trader Joe's creamy peanut butter-it's only peanuts and salt, if I recall correctly. Some of their versions omit the salt and they just have peanuts. If you just put in generic peanut butter as listed in the database it's probably referring to a store brand, full of sugars and crapola pb, which is not what you're eating.
