I need advice here. Am I exercising too much such that I'm not allowing my muscles to restore? Here's my regime:-

Monday - Elliptical or Stepper 30 mins And abs or core 15 mins
Tuesday - upper body Strength Training 45 mins
Wednesday - rest day but usually restless, may do elliptical, stepper or yoga 30 mind
Thursday - legs and core Strength Training 45 mins
Friday - Repeat Monday or Nike Training 45 mins intermediate lose weight program
Saturday - Swimming breast stroke 1 hour
Sunday - running 3-4 km, 30-45 mins

The part above the knee cap seems to ache most times, it is not painful though - just wondering if this is good pain? Muscle developing? Occasionally, the shoulder blade hurts due to old injury, but with stretches, it eases.

Any advice?

Just my opinion, but you do need some rest time.

If you are having pain, try to ease up on that area and watch your form.

Thanks for the advice. Took a day off and felt so much better on the knees.

looks fine to me. i typically have active rest days as well were i do an easy 30 minutes on the bike, elliptical or a yoga class. but every now and then i will have a complete rest day .

i also do a lot of body stressing workouts (heavy weights, sprinting, intervals) and havent had any major issues with my schedule for the past 5 months.

just make sure you get enough food, enough protein, stretch and use the foam roller a few times a week

Honestly, overexercising is a primary reason people gain weight back after losing it in addition to being on fad diets.. Unless you plan to keep this schedule for the rest of your life, I would cut back. You are just going to exhaust yourself,IMO!

If your knees hurt, you might want to consider doing something with less impact on your knees. Perhaps instead of running you could swim, or ride a bike. I try to do at least 45-60 minutes of cardio every day. Also try to do weight training every day. Sunday is my rest day, but I still do active resting like walking.

I exercise for 5 days a week max (when I am purposely doing more), because I don't want my body to get too used to too many workouts. I have to fight the urge to do more! I typically do 4 days 30-60 minutes, with a few walking errands during the week.

It looks fine, but like some of the other people have said, if you are having pain, you need to back off until it is gone. Then you need to ease back into the higher intensity. It is ok to workout 6 days a week if you have one complete day off and one active "rest day" where you do yoga or a bike ride (something low intensity). You need to listen to your body. Pain is your body telling you something is wrong or it is over worked and needs a break. With that amount of exercise, you need to make sure you are eating enough calories (probably more than you think you need) and enough protein (more than you think and it helps you muscles recover and gain strength). But that is just my opinion.

Thanks all, yes, I've up my calories and also watching my protein intake carefully, ie, ensuring im taking eggs, lean meat. Definitely need to have a complete rest day like what many of you said, I guess I was stressing myself a little too much, anxious to get to my goal. Got to learn to go with the flow. Thank you all!

doesn't look like too much overall, but i agree a rest day is nice. i usually bike at least 20 minutes on my rest day (commuting) and try to get a walk in, but skip strength training and running or any heavy workout.

i think the more important question is: can you sustain this for the rest of your life (with some flexibility with aging, of course). if the answer is no, then you might want to make some adjustments.

Just remember: there are plenty of non-exercise (read:workout) methods of being active! You should certainly be active about 30 mins of the day, everday... but it doesn't need to be in a gym or in front of some strength machines. Take a walk, walk the dog (if you have one, swim recreationally, play outside with the kids (if you have any), etc.

    :)
