I have always been told....

One of my pet peeves is getting advice that starts with "I have always been told..." or "I was taught".

A lot of the nutritional information we have learned by word of mouth over the years is questionable. Even the medical professionals have changed their advice based on more recent scientific studies.

Just because you were told something 20 years ago does not make it correct, or make it appropriate for another person's situation. (And I think this applies to a lot more than weight loss.)

One example: "I have always been told that you should never eat after 7pm".

My response: Interesting. Who told you that? What was it based on? My endocrynologist and dietician both agree that I need to eat right before I go to bed, or my blood sugar will get too low during the night. My experience tells me this is true. Do you really think I should change what I'm doing based on what you have "always been told"?

    So what are your examples?
