So I was talking to my friend who I met on here and as I was talking to her it dawned in me..... I think I need a dr. I have an issue with eating, not with just food. I feel like its in my head that I NEED do eat until my stomach hurts. This is the reason why all my weight is in my belly. I do this at just about every meal. I was. Brought up that I couldn't get up until my dish was cleaned... And I do that to this day with everything from pasta to salad to steak. I need help getting out of that state of mind, and just walking pout of the kitchen and past the refrigerator isn't helping. What kind of dr would I see? My regular dr? Nutritionist? Psychiatrist? Ugh

Call your regular doctor and ask for a referral to the appropriate party.

Honestly, since it's a behavioral issue, this sounds like a case for a mental health professional, either a counselor or a psychologist (probably not a psychiatrist).

I went through a phase like that, as well, this past fall/ winter. I didn't feel satisfied after a meal until my stomach straight up HURT. I packed on a lot of pounds, as you can imagine!

    You're definitely not alone.

You do mention that you think part of it is related to being brought up never to leave food on your plate, so I think you already suspect that part of it is psychological in nature. If you're not sure where to start, I'd start with your primary care physician and see what she/ he recommends. If what they say is unhelpful, I'd suggest a nutritionist or a counselor who specializes in "eating issues" (for lack of a better term!)

I also noticed that certain foods are more likely to get me to gorge... pasta is a MAJOR culprit, as are snack foods. I no longer cook pasta at home, and do not ever have snacky type foods in the house. That way, if I feel like snacking, I have to eat what's available, which is healthy foods only.

I hope that is at least a little bit helpful - I wish you the best!

I was exactly the same. It is a state of mind, if you think you need a doctor just make an appointment with your GP, they will point you in the right direction.

Personally I use my friends here, I also have Paul McKenna's book and CD - I can make you thin. He was the one that told me to start by always leaving something on my plate. My mum used to make me eat everything too.

I started by leaving 1 pea or the fat from the meat, slowly I cut my portions down and still left a bit. I have a dog so I now always save a bit for her.

It takes a long time to overcome the childhood programming but it can be done, I have done it, believe me if I can, you can matey!

Chances are you will benefit most from seeing both a Psychiatrist (a medically trained doctor who can prescribe medications) and a psychiatrist or therapist (not medical doctors but trained in therapy and counseling). This two-pronged approach usually works best for people.

You can find someone in your area via PsychologyToday.com.

It's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Seek help and you'll find it.

If you have health insurance, they should have a provider directory in the mental or behavioral health section. I found my psychologist by looking at the directory that I was provided by insurance, looking at their certifications, and making sure that they had experience with eating disorders (and this is something that you should look for too, because binging is disordered eating). It has helped immensely.

I would go to a Psychologist. They can help you work through it and help you change your habits. A Psychiatrist only prescribes drugs. Most just manage medication and do not do therapy.

My immediate thought was to start by not putting as much food on the plate. I had to do that. I used to have plates of food that were so big it was three servings. Now I make sure I have one actual portion of each thing on my plate. If I need more, I go back for the lower calorie healthy items. I also try to only cook enough for everyone to have a serving of each entree and sides. I dish it out and take the plates to the table. That way we're not all piling on the food.

I am terrible for eating everying on my plate (and not because my parents made me) and have eaten till my my tummy hurts at times. Have you thought about maybe trying hypnotism, I have heard good things about it that it can help to change bad habits.
