Stairs vs Elliptical

So, I was told that if I wanted to burn fat / calories I should use an elliptical. And for toning my butt and thighs, that's when I use the stair climber. Is this correct?
For some reason, I feel like I get a heavier workout on the stairs though (sweating more, but not sure about heart rate).
Thanks.

You'll get an overall better workout on the stairs for HIIT training and weight loss. Give the choice of either, stairs every time as they are more demanding and provide a better workout.0

Since there's no heart rate monitor on the stair climber, should I just perceive the intensity of my work out by my physical exertion?0

A good indication is your breathing, you should be breathing heavy but not struggling to breathing, then you're getting a good workout. Or buy a heart rate monitor watch!0
