Rant

Ugh! My grandmother got out cube steak for dinner tonight. I didn't think anything of it besides its sort of high on calories and fat (red meat after all), but I can afford it calorie wise today so I'll go ahead and not ask for chicken (again).
Mom gets home and starts talking about breading it and frying it. I pointed out that that would add calories and I'd prefer if she'd just pan fry it instead. So she gets mad and just throws it in a pan with a ton of oil in it and then decides our sides are going to be hash browns basically, with a ton of more oil and butter.
-sigh-
This is what happens every time I try to lose weight. I end up "hampering" their food style when I ask for a few substitutes. At first they're alright with it. But then they want to go to Olive Garden or eat fast food and my substitutes are suddenly met with heavy sighs and slamming pans.
They wonder why I've given up on losing weight so many times. It's annoying and upsetting that they can't support me simply by making a few small changes. I know this is my journey and not theirs (despite their need to lose weight as well), but still. A little support at home would be nice. I get sighs and looks when I ask for special things like wraps instead of white bread and fat free cheese (yes I know processing is bad) and -gasp- deli meat instead of the prepackaged stuff my mom likes.
I swear, I think I would do better on a diet if I lived on my own. I'm seriously trying to change my life. I don't want to be 45 years old, single, living with my mother at 315 pounds (especially since my high weight at 21 was 303 pounds :grumble: ) with type 2 diabetes.
At 45 I want to be taking a trip in Europe with my college aged kids, looking forward to retiring and traveling with my husband, looking forward to seeing my grand children be born.

Could you move in with me? We can share the cooking duties and try new low fat recipes!!:flowerforyou:
It must be so hard to have control.........when basically you have no control.
I am the mom..........so my husband and grown children eat what I cook........and like it
  Not really . DH will eat anything and when he craves garbage, I take him for an all beef Chicago dog.
Maybe you can cook up 4 chicken breasts on the weekend and when they are eating 'bad' food you can microwave the chicken.
Good luck, hon....I know it is hard but you can do this!!0 -

I know it's hard when people sabatoge your efforts and are not understanding. Sometimes you have to work around them. Try to keep some dry beans around (they are cheap) fiber inhibits fat absorption so you can have beans with the cube steak.
When you go to a fast food place skip the fries & throw away the bun and take an apple or grapefruit with you.
Just where ever you go try to find the healthier option. I have researched just about every option so I know how to make healthier choices no mater what my environment. When they see they can't beat you, they will join you.:drinker: :flowerforyou:0 -

I totally agree, I dont eat what everyone else is eating inless i know its healthy..But my family and colleagues are use to me eating healthy when they offer things is something like fruit or something nutritious...But if not you have to develop your on will power..you got to remember they are not on a lifestyle change you are...so with that being said and done you have to do what is best for you ya know :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0 -
thanks all.
Yeah, I do the healthy options at the fast food places. No buns, no fries, and fruit instead.
I love Chickfila, because their fruit cups are FRUIT cups not just mandarin oranges!
I didn't realize that beans would do that, thanks for the tip. I love black beans so I can make those as a side. ^_^
I rant but it's usually not that bad, just usually dinners. Lunch I'm on my own.
but thanks for the suggestions. I like the chicken breast one too. Then they can't complain that -they're- always eating chicken.0 -
Oh, and you could volunteer to do the cooking one or two nights a week. That way, you know you are eating healthy and they can "substitute" ice cream for the fruit cups you planned on for dessert.0
