What to eat after wisdom teeth extraction???

Hi everyone! I am looking for healthy foods that would be okay for me to eat after having my four wisdom teeth extracted yesterday. I'm thinking applesauce, greek yogurt and jello, but I know I'll get tired of that pretty quickly. Does anyone have any good recipes/ ideas that will not break me in calories?

Thank you!!! Your replies are greatly appreciated!

The first two days I would recommend eating the foods you have listed. After that you can eat what you'd like, you just have to be careful not to chew food too hard way in the back. I got all four of mine out at once, it's not as bad as they make it out to be. I would have mashed potatoes, or hot turkey sandwiches, for example as a dinner meal, something soft but filling. Be sure to rinse out the "holes" where your teeth were, otherwise, it will get nasty!

do you have protein powder? buy some that has at least 20 grams of protein and mix with a banana, unsweetened almond milk(choc or vanilla), a handful of spinach and 2T almond butter.
too much work? Smoothie King has a gladiator smoothie that is very low in carbs/sugar but high in protein. good luck!

Soup, Bannanas, probably most berries. For me personally, the pain went away quickly, so I wouldn't worry too much.

^^ this worked for me when I got mine taken out - oh, include smoothies to your list :)

Hopefully your extraction went smoother than mine did... I ended up with some pretty nasty bruises...
  • bump! i'm getting mine out in a month, really curious about this too! So far I've thought of yoghurt, ice cream, mashed potato/sweet potato and my friend said salmon is easy to flake off and eat when its cooked? best of luck!

I got mine out on Friday! I Want to eat everything lol. I've mainly been eating custard, ice-cream and meal replacement shakes. I'm over it! I had scrambled eggs today - so good. My mouth hurt a bit afterwards though. I tried some raisin toast today only got through a quarter of it. Speedy recovery

You can eat anything you were eating before - just stick it in the blender with a dash of milk. It's what I had when I had my 12yo molars removed. It might not look flash but it still tastes the same.

When I had mine out, I ate lots of soups, bananas,, applesauce, and puddings. Of course if you make it homemade, you can make them healthier.

Be sure to check with your dentist or oral surgeon about drinking through a straw, you do not want dry socket!
  • I am getting mine out in a few weeks and hadn't even considered food choices for afterwards - so thank you for starting this thread. I hope you recover quickly.

I personally would not suggest smoothies, unless you plan on eating them with a spoon. Sucking through a straw can cause dry sockets.

I ate soup...granted the sodium levels are rather high but you are not going to be getting a whole lot of calories the first few days otherwise. I was eating somewhat normally by the 3rd day. Just remember to use the syringe thing the dentist will give you to rinse your teeth out when you are allowed. That thing was awesome!

Fruit smoothies would be yummy. My son had his teeth removed and the pain medicine made him sick. Nothing stayed down! Hope it goes better for you. :flowerforyou:

Those all sound like good suggestions, but when I got mine out, the swelling was so bad I couldn't open my mouth for 3 days. Luckily I wasn't in any pain my mouth was just swollen shut so I didn't eat for 3 days. Everyone reacts differently.

ETA: you can't drink anything from a straw, so if you're having a smoothie or something make sure you can eat it with a spoon.

You're right, I should have specified no straws allowed :) Thanks for the catch!

Soy/rice/coconut ice cream, no dairy as this causes excess mucous which can cause problems with healing.

oatmeal, eggs, steamed veggies, baked/mashed potatoes, a banana spread with peanut butter, muffins, yogurt and berries, sugar free pudding

    Cheesy broccoli:
2 cups frozen, chopped broccoli florets
1/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
    1-2 T skim milk

    1. cook the broccoli as directed on the package. (you can boil it, or I pop it in the microwave to save time) 2. Place cooked broccoli in a bowl, add cheese and milk. 3. stir until cheese is melted.

Avoid crunchy veggies and fruits, meats, crackers, chips, dense or sticky breads with crust

After twenty four to forty eight hours it's not as important what you eat as that you do not suck, like through a straw, until your oral surgeon says it's okay. That can displace clots and sutures and such. I'd suggest that your oral surgeon knows best what you should eat, and you should eat what s/he tells you to, regardless of your assessment of it'sa "healthiness." But what s/he'll advise for the first forty eight hours is usually full liquids and stuff the texture of thin mashed potatoes and yogurt. WHAT it is is less important than it's texture. Almost anything can be pureed to the appropriate texture with some water and a food processor or sturdy blender.

I'd avoid the peanut butter if it's likely to make you suck on the roof of your mouth to free it. That is a good way to displace clots and sutures, and they usually advise you to avoid sucking at all.

If you puree up some of the soft foods you regularly eat (unfortunately like baby food) you will get some substance and not have to worry to much about just eating things like jello and yogurt. Trust me it won't be long till you can eat really food again. I went through it about a year ago and I made it through.

there is something in pineapple juice that helps reduce the swelling in your mouth. so might want to sneak in some pineapple juice.
  • My 23 yo son had a;ll four removed on Wednesday morning we have found that some of the best things to eat besides what everyone have suggested are pancakes with applesauce instead of syurp, and his has been drinking a quart of Silk
fruit and Protein Drink Daily. it comes in 3 fantastic flavors so he can have a different one each day.

Careful, salmon isn't something you want stuck in your mouth craters. That probably won't smell good if you have a hard time getting it out.
