I am doing the C25K (week 6). I am returning to running after a two year fat-fest. . I SO want to love running! I dream of waking up one day and find that I love it, but alas, so far I don't. Is there anyone out there that now loves running but in the beginning hated it? It's still hard for me to run for long amounts of time. I know it will get easier. I'm just hoping to hear from someone who started off NOT liking it but now does. What changed? How long did it take?

  • Oh, yes, I hated it for years and never even wanted to be a runner. I don't remember what motivated me to start running, but I did. February 2011 I started the C25K program. It wasn't easy, I often doubted myself, and I didn't enjoy running... until I got past that mental hump around week 8. Since then I've completed seven 5k races and am very much looking forward to a 5k adventure race this Saturday. There are still times I don't enjoy running, feel awkard and drag, but I do now like to run! It probably took me about 6-8 months to feel comfortable saying I liked to run.
This was my realization: I used to look at people running while I drove past in my car and thought, that'll never be me, I can't believe they are choosing to be out there running. Now, I look at those people and wish it was me! GOOD LUCK!!

The first two times I did the C25K, I injured myself, so I hated it. The third time was a charm. It helped that I had lost another 20 lbs, but even so, I still kept pushing too hard and injuring myself (still am because I am apparently an idiot). But I LOVE to run. I love the calorie burn, I love how my body is changing (just today I had three people tell me how thin I am looking and I haven't lost more than a pound in the last 6 months), I love how good I feel when I am running. I just love everything about it, to be honest.

I also hated running too! I decided that I needed to step up my activity level... walking was just not cutting it. I did C25K and still did not like running. What kept me going was that I was liking the way my body was looking and I was so impressed with what I could do after every week. I remember thinking wow, I just ran for 5 minutes which was huge for me at the time! I wanted to see what more I could do. It took me a good 9 months or so to really like running. Now I love it and am still continuing to push myself. I ran 15k on Saturday and will probably do a half marathon in the fall.

I think cardio via running or jogging is the most boring thing in the world, it's a necessary evil.

Absolutely this! I want to quit every time when I first start out, and make a pact that if I still feel that way after a mile, I can turn right around and go home. Usually, once I do one mile, I'm in the groove and want to keep going but at minimum, it guarantees I get two miles in, since I still have to get home.

As above, I always hate running. Hated it when I started but wanted to lose weight. Hate the first mile while my body fights with my brain. I really don't care for the actual running part at all. But I love, love, love LOVE the feeling I get when I've finished that run! That tremendous satisfaction - whether it is a race or just a workout. Whether I walked/jogged (wogged), ran, skipped, or however I dragged myself around however many miles, the simple fact is that I did it and my mind won the battle again! FOr me, there is no such thing as a bad run because every time I lace up shoes (or go barefoot) and get out and run, despite the fact that I do not love it at all, gives me more and more confidence that I can do whatever I set my mind to do.

and I am down 80 pounds.

So, I love hating running! a lot! <<grin>>

If you haven't tried it with music, that makes a big difference. It's okay to walk, too.. fast, slow..what counts is the distance.

    Love to hate it!

Yup. I still don't like it. Just finished C25K W7D1. Still no fun. But, now an hour later, I love that I did it. Success!!
