What should I do at the gym to maximize my workout?

I just joined the local YMCA and must say, I am rather intimidated at all of the equipment! Up until this point, I had only been doing workout DVDS and the elliptical machine I have at home, hadn't been to a real gym in years and forgot how overwhelming the whole experience can be. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to maximize my workout there? Tell me what machines are good for burning lots of calories, how often to do them, etc etc....I just don't want to get stuck in a rut. Thanks.

    If you have been doing DVDs and the elliptical up until now, I recommend focusing on heavy resistance training. Free weights are best, but if not, machines are better than nothing.

    Hi Jackie....Get a member of the staff to show you around.....It will give you some idea of the machines....I think the office will also give you a work sheet......If you ask them....
