I know this topic has been discussed before, because I've searched and read through the posts. However, I think it is worth bringing up again. I had no idea how much sodium is packed into foods that otherwise appear to be good for you.

Has anyone else been watching their sodium? Any great suggestions on keeping it low? I'm not one to use a lot when cooking, so I know I can control it there, it is the amount that sneaks into the processed convenience foods that I'm amazed at.

I hear ya! I have to watch sodium, fat, and sugar intake, sooooo... on a day to day basis, essentially, I don't consume processed foods! There is always that occasional day, but that's rare nowadays. If one reeeeeally wants/needs to do it, you can find a way! My oldest daughter was diagnosed with MS last year, and we are controlling it with diet--gluten/dairy/legume-free. That means pretty much no eating out. The only place that we do go, when we do, is In 'N Out. They have a simple menu and cater to people with diet restrictions. And, since she cannot have gluten, and therefore has her burgers "protein style" (no bread, but wrapped in lettuce), it's good for me too! If you need your fries with no salt, they'll serve it to you that way--very accomodating! And everything is fresh, never frozen, real food. But that's a rare treat for us, and usually only when we're on the road.

Fresh fruits, veggies, and meats are our main menu, with no added salt, and I usually fall wayyyyyyy short of sodium allowance with this kind of diet.

All the best on your journey!!

So, my boss just took my blood pressure and it was 142/95 which is pretty high. High blood pressure causes headaches. Causes of high blood pressure vary but I googled it and saw sodium as a cause. I added sodium to my list of things that the food diary tracks and i've went over my sodium intake by 3,000 grams today! The cause is I eat pickles just about every day. So I'm thinking this may be the cause of my terrible headache. I'm going to watch my sodium intake and see if my headaches ease up. Not sure if anybody else has this problem, just wanted to throw this out there too.

Do you mean In 'n Out Burger??? I lived in Upland CA back in the early '90's and loved, loved, loved that place. Their fries are the best. YUM.

The best way is to keep your processed foods to a minimum. Instead of buying lunch meat, but a whole turkey, cutlets, or fillets from a butcher shop and cook that. Try to eat more whole foods and that will help you out so much.

Soups have a ton of sodium too.

There are a lot of factors when considering sodium as a cause for headache. It's usually a combination of bodyfat %, foods consumed, and lack of hydration, and high blood pressure is certainly a result of these factors. There could also be some other underlying issues that you don't know about. My best advice is to see your doctor and bring along your food/exercise diary, so that he/she can see what you're doing and make educated suggestions.

All the best to you on your journey!
