my wife was just diagnoses with arthritis in her lower back. Where is yours, I can probably give you some exercises that shouldn't bother it.

When I stopped eating WHEAT and canned corn, and began eating rice noodles, rice crackers, spelt bread (a type of wheat, but without the problem).... my arthritis pretty much disappeared... and it was very bad.

I'd personally try giving up wheat for 2 weeks. You may see dramatic results.

The spelt bread isn't like that nice soft white "air" bread we're used to, but you can toast it and it makes a nice sandwich.

I also make my own wholegrain crackers in my dehydrator.

I have osteo, which I've also changed with diet (I can add to the wheat experience, RowanC) and exercise, but my knees are still bad. My doc. recommended biking, which is still my favorite exercise.

But, really, you should probably ask your doctor or a therapist, I'd hate for you to have wrong advice, and every case is unique.

You should swim, but the pool should have warm water otherwise it could be dangerous and painful for you

I would agree with Viviakay. Rheumatoid Arthritis is quite different (and in many cases more severe) than osteoarthritis. Your doctor will be the best source for information on the best exercises.

    Good luck

find a pool. I struggle as well. Take it easy and slow and if you do any form of exercise, only do what you can and if you need to stop, don't tell yourself to go a little longer. Just stop. I know the pain and its a lot of pain and I am cringing just thinking about it.

Remind yourself that you are making the effort and we all can't run on the treadmill for an hour. I can't even walk fast for more than 30 mins without being in pain.

I used to do lots of yoga and that helped me out a lot. I found any pain was more associated (well mentally) to the stretching of yoga rather than my ailments. I did it almost everyday.

I have AS (ankylosing spondolititis) which is a form of arthritis in the rheumatoid family. I have attended lectures about living with the disease and most say that it is important to continue to exercise but limit impact activities or heavy weight bearing activities. They can cause flare ups and discomfort. I have had great success with elliptical trainers because they are low impact, multiple muscle groups, good range of motion, exercises.
