Grandmother with a bad hip

My grandmother needs a hip replacement but was told by doctors that she needs to lose some weight before they will operate on her. My question is, what are some good exercises she can do with her bad hip. I know swimming is good but are there some others. She can't walk much at all.

Has she considered Tai Chi. Programs just got a big federal grant to offer classes to the elderly to work with them pre- and post- surgery for rehabilitation and balance. She may check her local health care facilities to see if they have any offerings.0
