Tattoo's that represent change?

Hey guys,

I figured who best to ask than a group of people who have or who are in the process of changing. I have 10-15 more pounds to hit my ultimate weight loss goal. One of my rewards is my first tat. My older brother is a Tattoo artiest and is moving back to Texas maybe right before I hit my goal weight, so I might have my tattoo artiest lined up soon lol. Anyways I just need to come up with the tat. I refuse to put something permanent on my body that doesn't mean anything to me. So this journey (yes I used that word) has been an up hill battle for me and I'm sure it has for everyone. While I see the light at the end of the horribly dark tunnel, I'm ready to decide on my tat and I'm almost ready to get it.

I have an idea of what I want, however unless it's done just perfect I don't see my husband liking it, and since he will be seeing the tattoo a lot more than anyone else I do want him to like it. The tattoo, I want it to be a reminder of how far I've come. My idea is a Catepillar on a leave like it just crawled out of it's cocoon on the left (tramp stamp) and on the right a butterfly, gorgeous butterfly flying off. With maybe some tribal swirls or something. I just don't know how I'd do it and my husband liking it. I told him what I wanted last night and he turned his nose up to the idea. If my brother does it I know it'll be great, however if my brother doesn't I'm not sure.

Any other ideas? Maybe you can use my idea and explain how to do it without it looking tacky or whatever???

I'd leave out the caterpillar and stick with the butterfly by itself. It's the most symbolic image of metamorphosis.

Coy fish represent change and determination. Dragonfly also represents change. Butterflies do as well. There are tons of butterfly designs and colors. Good luck wit your first ink! I have four, and have my next tat planned for when I hit my goal weight lol

it sounds like it could be really great

I would ask your brother to draw it out for you, if you think he isn't seeing your vision ask another artist to draw it out and let them know that you have an artist but pay them the deposit if you like it.

i did a google search a bit for you (i love tattoos) but couldn't really find any concept art for you. maybe you can do it all in the shape of a larger sized circle. catepillar crawling towards a cocoon and a butterfly emerging. you can do a couple of each stage in different positions.

i'm sure your brother is also great, but don't be biased. check out other portfolios. i have had 3 artists and my third one is such a keeper, her work is amazing. i would hang her paintings on all my walls if i could afford them.

I don't know, I feel like butterflies and tribal tattoos are somewhat cliche.

You might want to ask your brother to draw some sketches for you and help you develop your idea to make it something unique and meaningful to you.

you can do one wing different than the other also. i have a blue and pink wing to represent freedom from gender norms.

maybe a frail ripped broken type wing and one beautiful glowing and super colorful!!

Thank you all. I might try to draw something out, I also draw, so maybe I can draw something out. I thought about leaving out the caterpillar. I don't know yet we'll see, maybe?

I'm doing something similar to that. But I am getting a Phoenix. Since basically it dies & is reborn. :)

This. The world doesn't need another butterfly, Coi fish or bird tattoo.

If you want it to be original, get something unique!!!!

I never said anything about being totally original, I like butterflies, but the reason behind the butterfly/catepillar is the transformation. It's meaning, has nothing to do what others have. If you look above at my drawing, you'll see what I have in mind.

i like your sketch, leave out the caterpillar. take it to the artist and ask them to perfect your idea into art!!! that's what i always do at least.

for me, the symbol i am going to use to show my change, is the phoenix. i've had it planned for 3 years now. just waiting for the timing to be perfect!!!

don't they start out as catepillers then cocoon then butterfly. i am just hoping you aren't going for sequence.

it is a good concept, i would definitely get an artist to do a sketch. and just so you know, what you want is going to be really large. a good artist won't tattoo that on you in that size.

OP- I LOVE your sketch, but I'm kind of agreeing with the others. Leave out the Caterpillar and take it to a tattoo artist to have them draw it out a little bit better (skin is different than paper, you know?)

I myself have frogs. To ME a frog is the ultimate symbol of change, progression and rebirth.
Thanks to a Google search, I now know that it can mean so much more than that:

    http://www.whats-your-sign.com/animal-symbolism-frog.html

At major events in my life, I have gotten a new frog added. When this current "transformation" is complete, I'll be adding yet another. :drinker:

Good luck with your butterfly! :flowerforyou:

I'll be honest, stick to your guns and do the tattoo. I love the idea and it's not one for transformation that is over used like the phoenix or Koi Fish
