Potato Chips

Hi friends

Lately, I have been really into creating healthy variations of my favorite foods. In the last couple days I've tackled cup cakes, cookies, zucchini bread, and banana bread. Well, my boyfriend brought some of the snacks to work, and his very healthy co-worker loved everything I made, and even put in a request... or put me up to a challenge. He wants to see if I can create some kind of healthier potato chip. I'm thinking slice the potatoes thin and bake them, and add some seasoning, but I'm wondering if anyone has any specific recipes or recommendations?

Thanks :flowerforyou:

Cut a potato into slices...arrange them on a plate....spray with some low fat cooking spray....put them in the microwave for about 7 mins. Before you put them in the microwave you can put whatever seasoning you want on them...I like season salt. It quick, easy, and yummy potato chips

I saw this on the BBC show "you are what you eat" - I have not tried it but I plan to:

using sweet potatoes and other root veg (turnip, carrot, etc.) peel into thin strips with a vegetable peeler. lightly spray with oil, lightly salt if you must & bake on low heat until crispy (won't take long because they are so thin - like real potato chips).

    Thanks, everyone.

Unfortunately, sweet potatoes literally make me gag  I wish I liked them, and I've tried and tried but I just cannot get them down.

I'm going to do a little experimenting, I'll let you know what I come up with!

Ok- I made 4 different kinds of chips. I used 100 grams of red potatos for each kind (appox. 89 calories in the 100 grams of potatoes).

1- Dipped the slices of potatos in melted light butter (100 calories) for a total of 189 calories
2-Used I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray (40 sprays total- sprayed both sides) for a total of 129 calories
3- Used Olive Oil cooking spray on both sides (approx. 42 calories) for a total of 131 calories
4- Dipped the slices of potatoes in Country Crock (1.5 tbsp = 75 calories) for a total of 164 calories

IMO, #1 and # 3 came out the best. For 58 calories less, I'd go with the Olive Oil cooking spray version again next time! :flowerforyou:

and its spicy! Ive made em before theyre really simple and TOTALLY delicious.
Im sure you could cut em up however you want to make em.

I was kinda curious how good or bad these really are, anyway
  • Hi - I have heard that if you coat the slices with beaten egg whites and then back the egg white gives them a crispy coat and you can season the whipped egg whites with whatever you like!
  • I meant BAKE not back - good grief :embarassed:
