so i think getting some kind of martial arts dvd would be a fun way to make myself exercise. i have a hard time with exercise that feels like exercise. i go swimming and horseback riding, but i can't do that everyday. the other days i walk the treadmill and do some strength training, but that bores me so much. i hate doing it. i need exercise i look forward to. so martial arts pops up. i know a gym membership or dojo would be best, but frankly...im poor. sooo dvds. but i'm completely clueless as to which direction to go with. there are so many different styles and intensities. i need advice on first which type of martial art to do and then which video is good for complete beginners. i want something thats not just a teaching video or a workout video, but something in between. PLEASE HELP! MUCH APPRECIATED! :D

I do not know about any dads but grew up doing martial arts. Tae Kwon Do is very tournament styled and if you have access to a punching bag you can do it without a dvd. Just put three targets on the bag, 1 in the front and 1 on each side of the bag. You want them to be chest level so that they are reachable with your legs if you are not flexible. Sorry I couldn't be of much help though.

I looked into this also, my husband said he wanted to do a martial arts dvd, but all I could find was tae bo
  • Try some billy blanks. He has great ones. also, if your cable tv has on demand there might be a section that is under something like "health" and there might be workout shows on that.
  • tae bo for weight loss is great. I have lost the weight after 2 pregnancies doing billy blanks
  • I do taekwondo, and i love it. I also got Jillian Michaels Kickbox Fastfix DVD. Pretty similar. I love it. 3 different workouts, 20 mins, all different. Targets arms, legs, or abs. Gets you working pretty hard fast. Highly highly suggest it!

copy/pasting part of my workout I do at home which is part of my boxing training:

Cardio (1 or mix of these):

    -walking/jogging

    -Stationary Bike

    -Jumping ropes

Calisthenics with 2x25 lbs dumbells where appropriate(all of them with different sets)

1)sit on floor with legs apart and back perpendicular to the floor and punch air moving the hand towards the opposite leg (making you move your back/ab) This works out your abs, back, your thighs, your hands and shoulders and creates practice for punching. Important for boxing

    2) lay on the floor raising your back up so that your back is resting on your elbows. Raise the legs a bit. Start air biking

    3) repeat (1)

    4) pushups

    5) While lightly jogging in one place, punch air straight ahead

    6)squats

    7)Jumping Jacks

8windmill: spread legs, try to touch the opposite feet with your hands

    9) 4way: Jumping Jacks with pause when the arms are paralell to the ground.

10)while standing, raise one leg so your thighs are parallel to the ground and try to touch your opposite knees with elbow

    11) repeat (5)

    12) 2x rounds of shadow boxing

    13) Light weight lifting

14)different crunches (regular, raise one leg, raise both legs up)

That is a tall order; first do you want to learn the art or just do some cardio kickboxing? If you are planning on serious martial art training than you really need to find a dojo. MA dvds can only compliment what your instructor is teaching you and only if they are the same style. When I studied Shorin Ryu karate most of the references I saw in the stores were not demonstrating the same techniques. That is because there are 3 branches of Shorin Ryu and about 100 off shoots.

Also you will need to do some research as to what style is best for you. Look around in your community, google the different styles and then make up your mind.

If all this is over whelming then start will a Tae bo dvd and work from there. Martial Arts will get you in shape, is very rewarding and you will learn self defense but it cannot be effectively learned solely from a book or dvd.

If you wish to talk more about this you can friend me and I will do my best to help you.

get you a second hand punch bag or a new one and start to punch it with a basic punch for ladies. Learn a basic low leg kick and start doing low kicks. build the speed and when you are comfortable start making combinations of punches and kicks. Ladies punch are very basic.
hit the bag with the center of the ulnar bone build up the pain tolerance. PM me for more if you like or friend me. Good luck.

I really could not find any MA DVDs when I went looking for easily accessible titles.

So all of these recommendations are kickboxing:
Instructors - they all have a number of titles to choose from
    Cathe Freidrich
    Ilaria Montagnani
    Amy Bento

    Specific titles -
Aerobarre - a boxing and ballet mix (no kick in the boxing!)

Here is a web address for YouTube that has TaeBo workouts on it. I personally do Level 11 and the one labeled Exercise Fitness. They are great. Hope it helps.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! lots of good ideas. :) i would love to eventually join a dojo but its just not a good time right now, so i suppose i will focus on a good workout. it probably is a bad idea to try to learn something from a dvd. and i might actally have a punching bag somewhere... i will look. thx for all suggestions. :)
