Calories and daily limit excesses / deficits

I'm just curious... I'm thinking I know the answer but figured I'd get people's impressions too...
If my daily limit is 1800, and I only consume 1200 of those calories, is it safe to add more calories to the next day? Or is the daily limit set that way because of how our bodies burn calories based on food and exercise for the day?
Reason I ask... I box on Thursday nights (from 5:30 - 6:30) - and burn about 850 calories doing so. Which usually throws me into a caloric deficit, and yet I find myself unable to tolerate much food afterward. The next day, however, I am RAVENOUS!! I could eat all day! I wake up starving, and find I need to have snacks all freaking day (or I get very grumpy).
Thoughts?

I don't see where there would be much issue with it if looking at a total deficit for the week.0 -
sounds like your blood sugars are out of whack to me. How about trying an hour after boxing, eating like a banana. It is not a whole lot, but it has carbs that will balance your sugars out.
I am new on this journey myself so not sure about this, but it has worked for me after a strenous afternoon at the dog park.0 -
No help to you but I am also curious about this.
I reckon on a weekly basis I am about right on target in terms of calorie limits, but only if I do my long runs and usually on the day on the runs I don't really want to eat much, but the day after I am usually eating like there is no tomorrow.0 -
Think of it based on a week not a day. If you eat under one day feel free to go over the next (by the same amount)0

I never thought about it being blood sugar related... I often grab a bun and chili from Tim Hortons and snack on that throughout the night.
Oh, and when you mention the dog park, in conjunction with your super cute dog in the profile pic, it almost makes you think the dog is answering the post! LOL!0 -

look at weakly deficit/surplus more than a daily
you can try having little something after boxing (banana, protein shake)
but it's safe to eat rest of the calories the next day0 -

That's kinda what I was wondering, but thought maybe it might not be as good from a metabolism and fat burning deal. (I am so NEW to nutrition and how the body functions!)

I think of it based on a week (in fact the iPhone app has a weekly summary graph that I use - it tells you how many net calories you are over/under based on your weekly goal). I've been steadily losing for almost 6 months (47 pounds lost total in that time) so it works for me.
I do find that my body responds better to consistency rather than to a "cheat day" or the like. When I have one day that is 500+ calories over then then the next 5 days are each 100+ calories under I may still meet my weekly net calorie goal, but my body doesn't respond the same way as if I am within 100-150 calories of my goal either way each day. Play around with it to see what works best for your body. Remember that MFP is extreemly helpful, but it isn't the gospel of weight loss!0 -
I agree with Jac (and I usually do) that if your weeks are averaging out to be 1800 calories, there is absolutely no need to consistently eat the same amount every day. Your body doesn't reset every night at midnight... If you find that there's a lot of variation day-to-day, you may want to look at a weekly goal rather than a daily one. Unfortunately MFP doesn't really allow you to do this so you'll have to do a bit of your own manipulation there. I personally find that consistency helps me mentally, but it shouldn't be necessary.
You don't need carbs after boxing to "fix" blood sugar levels. High energy aerobic sports like boxing will cause your body to use glucose as a primary source of fuel, which means you need some carbohydrate energy BEFORE your activity. Afterward, there will be no effect except perhaps a spike in blood sugar. Protein is more important.
I am a boxer myself, if I try to work out with low blood sugar I'm going to have a VERY frustrating training session. Yes, even a banana helps... 30-60 minutes before training0 -

He probably would if given the chance! He is a very opinionated young dog. My favorite story is this year he has learned to bring me first one shoe, I will put it on and then he will go get the other shoe and bring it to me to put on. If I don't put the shoes on, he will pick up one and start whipping his head back and forth and hitting me with my shoe. It is go to the dogpark or be beat.0 -
