Sodium levels

Hi just wanted to ask a question dumb or not. I was just having some cottage cheese and for 1/4 cup serving of fat free cottage cheese there is 500mg of sodium???? I buy it because of protein amounts and I love it. Anyone know why there is such a high level of sodium in this food? Someone might suggest to eat greek yogurt but we only buy the plain for smoothies and I cannot eat that plain. Or if you had other snack suggestions.
Thanks for any info you can offer.

Generally, when you remove fat from a food you remove a lot of taste -- so they add sodium because that makes it tastier. Check out the sodium on anything labeled low fat, fat free, sugar free, etc. . .

figured since it is only supposed to be cheese curds it shouldn't have anything extra. i really hate buying anything with extra fat in it but now for me sodium intake is way more important.

Actually, when it comes to cottage cheese, you're likely to find even the full fat version has a lot of sodium. Not sure why - maybe something having to do with the process of making it? How about greek yogurt for protein instead?

Almost all cheese products are high in sodium. I just figure with cottage cheese it is to try to make it edible.

I think ricotta might be less but not sure. Greek Yogurt is definitely less.

Try to shop around and compare. I use both greek yogurt and cottage cheese 1% (have my sodium set at 2000) and am usually okay. Check out my diary (no cottage cheese today though).

I have to say you have a lot of knowledge in nutrition.

I have found in the past (can't eat cottage cheese anymore - over did it) there was a low sodium/low fat and it wasn't bad. I always look for low sodium. But you still have to check. I was looking at organic low sodium soups the other day and they were higher in sodium than regular soups. CHECK LABELS! Hope it helps :)

That made me lol-there must be a lot of sodium in rice cakes too then.

I eat cottage cheese every day. A quarter of a cup. My sodium is usually around 1000-1500 a day. It's always under.
