Shin Splints :(

So I just started my walking routine and I feel so much better after. However, I am starting to get shin splints and I used to get them all the time in volleyball. I was doing some reading and they said that sometimes its because "people do too much too soon"....but I am just walking? Any tips or advice for how to deal with this nasty pain??

Thanks!

I started walking a few weeks ago every evening and at first they hurt pretty quickly into my walk, but now I make sure to stretch and I don't have any pain. I'm actually up to jogging part of my neighborhood now. I'm sure there is better advice out there, but that's what has worked for me!

Shin splints are so often caused by wearing badly-fitting shoes. What are you walking in at the moment?

Do you over-pronate? If so, maybe the shoes you are in don't give you enough support. Just a few ideas :)

If the shoes are too old, getting some new ones often helps. Also RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation

first thing i would do is look into maybe new shoes, go to a running store and get fitted for a walking shoe or running shoe. It will be a huge help. It will help the shin splints feel better if you can walk on your heels for about 30-40secs a few times a day, this is huge help, it will help doing it, but feel better in the long run.

The two most common causes of shin splints are wearing the wrong sneakers and over training. Try getting fitted at a store that specializes in selling running sneakers. They will do a gait analysis (it should be free) and recommend the right shoes for you. When I first started running I was wearing the wrong sneakers and had really bad shin splints. Once I got fitted for the right running shoe my shin splint went away.
