I seem to get extremely tired/sleepy about 10-15 minutes after eating a normal sized meal. Does anyone have any idea why that happens?

Blood sugar crash. Eat smaller meals, closer together, and avoid simple carbs like the plague.

The smaller meals don't affect your blood sugar as much, eating meals closer together helps keep your sugar levels even, and simple carbs have an immediate effect on your sugar levels.

I have that happen to me when I have meals that spike my sugar levels, or when I have just eaten fatty foods. What are you normally eating when this happens?

I don't think it's a blood sugar spike...I can see that a couple of hours after a meal when your blood sugar levels go back down, that's when you would feel tired...not right after eating...any other thoughts?

abatres7 - it happens after any meal...a Subway sandwich, chinese food, pasta...

I have the same thing. I understand it has to do with how you as an individual metabolize different foods. I know from the radio show that one of Jillian Michaels' first 2 books has a quiz you can take to figure our if you are a slow, 'normal' or fast metabolizer and what foods trigger that feeling but I havent had the time to look for the book yet. Maybe your library has a copy??

    Just a thought.

    Hope it helps a little.

It happens to me due to my blood sugar levels and it happens within minutes of eating simple carbs (ie: white bread, pasta, desserts). Sugar causes your insulin levels to surge at which time your brain sends a signal to your body to cease activity.

If it happens when you have eaten something other than carbs, maybe it is an allergy? Or possible adrenal gland issues?

Have your glucose levels checked. That is a symptom of insulin resistence. I have just been diagnosed and am on a low dose of metformin. I have to really watch my carbs. Hard to do.

Yes, it is the carbs that is making you lethargic...............

Pasta, the bread on a Subway sandwich and white rice that is in chinese food................3 of the carb heaviest stuff you can eat.

    It is spiking your insulin.

I have the same issue. We're in the middle of figuring it out- because I don't eat carb-heavy foods when it happens. Nor is there a lot of fat or anything else. We're thinking for me, it's allergies.

So far I've noticed it with wheat(whole), peppers(any kind) and onions. :( No more fajitas for me.

I take Metformin already and eat often (I'm a snacker) and I don't eat carb heavy stuff, nor do I eat simple carbs with any meal. So we're thinking allergies. Now just to be able to afford going to an allergy specialist. :ohwell:
