People have told me I should squat to tone my butt and I was wondering how I should start... how many sets and reps? I don't want to overdo it right away.. How much time should I do it for?

It depends on your current ability to squat with proper form. Squats in bad form can lead to injury or just be useless. Even my personal trainer sucked at teaching me how to squat, but this video helped me a ton:

Also, consider doing the two hundred squats challenge: http://www.twohundredsquats.com/index.html

There's a cool program called 200 squats. You begin with an initial test to see how many squats you can do at one time. Then based on what you did, you are slotted into a column where they list how many sets and how many reps to do.

    Here's the site. http://www.twohundredsquats.com/

Body weight squats are OK for a couple weeks. If you want to make some serious progress...

It's time to pick up a barbell.

I highly suggest you read Starting Strength, as form is extremely important.
Stronglifts 5x5 is online free and useful too.

Starting Strength has you squat 3x5 three times per week, and add 5-10 lbs to the bar each workout.
    Stronglifts is 5x5.

My wife went from squatting 45lbs to 120lbs in about 7 weeks. I'd imagine the average lady could do the same. (She is doing 3x5)
