I wanna run. i wanna run sooo bad. So i started running during my walks. I run til i cant breathe(which happens extermely fast) and then continue walking til i feel okay enough to try to run. I sweating, breathing hard and side hurting and yet my time isnt changing. It still takes me 30 mins to do 2 miles. So will i ever be able to run or should i just stick to walking? i really just feel like giving up. Its just not gettin any easier. Its been about 2 weeks.

    Congratulations on wanting to run!

    I would recommend slowing down your running a bit because you shouldn't be getting to the point you cannot breathe easily. A bit winded, perhaps, but not struggling for air.

    Slow it down and maybe set a goal to run for 1 minute, walk for 2, etc. until you reach 2 miles. Once you can run that 1 mile relatively easy, go longer, like 90 seconds or 2 minutes.

    Try the couch to 5k app. It works, I'm doing it at the moment, it's all about building stamina and muscle tone. I think where you're going wrong is running too fast, instead of building up gradually. Anyway, try it, it might work for you :wink:

    lots of people say the couch to 5K (C25K) is an awsome plan to follow if you haven't ran before. I just started running this spring. I could walk a 100 miles, but could never run 1. I just made up my mind and started out SLOW. Started with a jog that may be even slower if I walked, but just kept at it. Would walk when I couldn't jog anymore until I recooperate, and then did my slow jog. I also do hot yoga which I found VERY beneficial for the breathing, as in yoga they teach you how to breathe slow and deep and to concentrate (regular yoga does this too). I now can run 5k @ 6.5 km/hour. Keep at it. I am now motivated to stick with it because I am seeing the results

    You will be able to run consistently. The run/walk method is an excellent way to start. Don't get discouraged. If you're feeling winded, just slow it down. It will definitely get better. Good luck and see you on the road!

    Definitely google Couch to 5K - it's an awesome program. I just finished it. From thinking I was dying after having to run for 90 seconds..I can run 4 miles now. If you repeat a week, so be it. You can do it! Just find a comfortable pace and build up endurance then speed. :) Good luck!!

    It takes time. Walk/jog intervals are really good for beginners. And make sure when you're jogging that you're doing it slowly. Speed and distance will come, but if you try to run right from the get go you'll end up hurting yourself.
  • Thank yall so much..i will try a slow jog to start with. Im a lil anixous to get to where i can run. So maybe i have been trying to run to fast. Thanks so much

    First build endurance then worry about speed. The run/walk method is great for beginning. You need time to build strength in your legs and core, getting your muscles and joints used to running....and you can't short cut that or you run the risk of injuries. Even as someone who walks a lot (walk my dog 1.5 - 4 miles every day) I have had to build up to running distance.

    Do you have anything (pedometer or gps enabled watch / phone app) that can track pace during your run / walk? It has helped me to know my pace when doing walk / run intervals and during cool down walk after a longer run. That way I'm not slowing way down on the walk interval. I can also use that to push my pace during the run since I have now develop the stamina to do 3 and 4 mile runs.

    I also agree that jogging slowly in combination with walking is a good fat burning exercise and will also build your endurance slower than if you run all out until having to start walking.

    learning a good pace is one of the hardest things about running and jogging.

    and congrats on ANY sort of running! a lot of people just cannot get past that mental barrier.

    but please, take it slow. knee problems and shin splints are very common among people who try too hard to be runners when they are only just getting started walking.

    I tried getting in on running myself but it made me want to shoot myself. I absolutely can not stand doing any form of endurance related activity.

    I'd rather do burpees 'til I threw up than run a mile. That's just me though.
