Pulled Back Muscle?? GRR

When I was running on Tuesday last week (5 miles) about the second mile I got this pain in my back. It hurt sooo badly! By the 2 1/2 mark it was in my rib cage, and by mile 3 it was in my chest, back, and rib cage. I stopped and walked for about a 1/4 mile. Then ran, walked like 15 seconds, then just ran the rest of the way. Only my chest and rib hurt when I was running the rest of the way. . It no longer feels like a heart/rib problem like I thought it was, it feels like a back problem. I did work my back the day before at the gym, but didn't feel anything that day. I did cardio (not running) yesterday and it was fine, no problem! I wasn't able to run at all last week (except Tuesday of course) I am training for a race and I already took 1 week off 3 weeks ago due to being sick so I can't afford another 2 weeks off! I am running a 15k in July so I need to be in shape. A 15k is 9.3 miles and I can only go 6 but have already taken a week off and this is my second week. My back seems to be exactly the same! hasn't changed at all. it is along the left side of my back, middle being the worst and I am not able to run because it hurts REALLY bad and makes it hard to breath, i am not able to workout my upper body either obviously :P
I am soooo scared of losing my strength that i took sooo long to build up. I was running 8 minute miles and up to 15-20 miles a week running 3-4 days a week. I went to the chiropractor hoping he would help, but he didn't do anything or really even tell me what was wrong. He said I could keep running but i don't think he understood that it hurts to run! lol I am able to do lower body, stairs, bike, and yoga. I can do sprints on the treadmill if I am holding on the the heart rate bar thingy. I really don't wanna lose my running too much so what should I do to keep it?
And do you think it is a pulled muscle?? A strain? A knot? I have NO idea and it doesn't seem to progress at all!
Any thoughts would be really appreciated!

Have you tried asking a different type of practitioner if the chiropractor couldn't help? How about a doctor, physio or osteopath?
You shouldn't mess with backs, however frustrating it is now, you need to think of the long term.0 -
Anyone else have any thoughts?0
