So I've been losing weight steadily for the past couple months with some roadblocks. Heres my issue:

Last week I weighed in at 137lbs.

This week I weighed in at 142lbs.

Thats got to be water weight right? I did NOT eat over my calories any day this week, I've started jogging in the mornings, and I've been drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.

What happened?

You need to eat more. Perhaps water retention from starting a new jogging schedule. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll see a big loss next week!

    p.s. Drink more water!

Yes, it is most likely water. Starting a new exercise can cause that. Woman issues can as well. Try upping your water a bit more and give it a few weeks. :)

You can easily fluctuate five pounds in any given day. It could be sodium, exercise water retention, hormones, etc. Keep doing what you're doing. Unless you over ate by 17,500 calories you didn't gain five pounds of fat.
  • Okay thanks guys. I just freaked out looking at the scale this morning. It was a bit of a shocker to go up. Hasn't happened like this before xD

I'll be drinking lots more water from now on

In order to gain a lb of fat, you would need to eat 3500 calories more than you would burn.

Is it super hot and humid where you live right now? I swear that has an impact on my weight!

If you're not currently tracking sodium, I'd suggest adding it to your food diary (under settings), that way you know for sure. I agree with the others that say it's just as likely to be water retention from the increase in jogging. Most people mistake this for muscle gain but in fact, it's the muscle tissues retaining water as part of their naturail healing process (similar to how your ankle swells when you twist it but more spread out so it's not as visible). And, yes, of course TOM has a lot to do with it too.

Keep doing what you're doing and maybe increase the water intake, at least on the days where you eat a lot of high sodium foods and/or workout. Good luck!

I've dropped/gained 8 lbs in a day, many many times. Water retention can mask true fat loss for an extended period of time. If you're going to look at the scale, just focus on trends over time.

This happens to me a lot...I hate it. For me, it's because of accidentally eating too much sodium (water retention) or my woman problems are coming. It comes off in a few days.

Annoying but true - those fluctuations can really mask progress. So if not already tracking, add sodium to your tracker, log water then weigh in daily and you will get a good sense of how your body reacts to your daily sodium intake. If you add lemon to your water it can also help you shed excess water weight.

Excuse me? Her diary is closed and she gave no indication of how much she is eating. Is this a form of Tourette's or what? You can't just reflexively tell everyone they need to eat more. You have no idea what she's eating.

LOL! It does seem to be the stock answer here for everything.

Haha Thank you! I eat soooo much each day (even if it is a minimum amount of Calories) and I am soooo stuffed after. I can't imagine eating anymore than I do now! I go to sleep stuffed.

I do get very defensive when people tell me to eat more. I honesty can't. I'll burst!
