Clicking Joints

Ever since I have lost most of my weight, I have had an issue with clicking joints. It started with my knees, and would happen when I got up from a chair, in the gym, or walking down stairs. It has now spread to my hips and shoulders. It is not painful, just a noisy cracking sound.

My PT doesn't seem too concerned about it, but I am interested to know if anyone else has this problem, knows what causes it, if I should be concerned about it, and is there any way to stop it or lessen the occurance.

I don't think its an Omega 3 issue, as I eat a lot of tuna and salmon.

Thanks in advance for your input.

my knees have started to make a 'crunching' sound when i bend them/go up and downstairs etc since losing weight and exercising :/

Some people say 'oooh knee op' and some say 'don't worry 'i've had that for years'

I have a shoulder, 2 wrists and 2 ankles that click allllll the time! I've had two shoulder surgeries for a torn everything. Sprained my wrists several times and have never injured my ankles.

I've talked to a few doctors about it and they are rather unconcerned as long as there is no pain. It could just be tight tendons or a host of other things but as long as you have full range of motion and no pain, it's not that big of deal (as my wrist clicks as I type this....)

My knees never started making noise until I started exercising regularly. It doesn't cause me pain but it sounds terrible and makes people around me cringe. Usually it just happens when I bend my knees completely and then straighten them.

My personal theory is that my kneecaps are being pulled out of alignment by the development of muscles in my hamstrings and quads, causing grinding. I do a lot of lunges and squats regularly. I could be wrong about that though. Since it doesn't cause me pain I haven't gone to the doctor about it.

I also run, but not a lot, so I don't think it's from that. It might just be age in my case, I'm 41 - could be a degenerative thing - but I swear I never noticed the cracking in my knees until I started getting more fit, ironic huh?

I started taking hyaluronic acid tablets because it's supposed to lubricate joints, so far I don't know if it's doing anything though.

Go to the GP? I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about, it might be like knuckles cracking and just pockets of air getting moved about. Better safe than sorry though!

Glucosamine supplements are your joints friends. I take two tablets (1500mg total) twice a day and am 'click free' :-)

My hips pop, have for a long time, and they're LOUD. I finally googled it and found snapping hip sydrome. From what i understand its when your tendon over the joint is tight and it slides across the joint making a popping sound. It doesnt hurt and hasn't caused any issues. Wonder if the same theory applies to popping knees etc? (of which my knees also snap/pop).

Enough with the arthritis talk! My dad suffers from this, in fact its so bad he moved to a hot country (well that's what he told me) and is now almost wheelchair bound.

As I know this is genetic, I was tested for this a year ago (was clear) and its one of my reasons for losing weight and doing strength training. You gave me a fright when I saw that word.

Maybe losing weight has relieved pressure on your joints which may allow more cavitation to occur.
