Walking and hip pain

I like to go walking a lot and I'm working on gradually lengthening the distance I walk. My legs feel awesome after 2.5 miles but my right hip starts hurting a lot and I usually end up stopping after that point. I bought some new shoes recently thinking it would help (and it did help with leg and foot fatigue) but that stupid hip pain is still bugging me! I usually don't stretch before I walk and I wonder if I should start?

Part of the pain is probably from the weight I'm still carrying I'm sure, I'm just not sure if there's something else I can do to help alleviate some of the discomfort.

I should also mention I had bad hip/pelvic issues when I was pregnant last year and in January that left me practically bed ridden for my third trimester. Also hoping it's not something to do with that! If any ladies have had experience with SPD though perhaps you can also give some insight!

Pain is an indicator that something is wrong! You need to see an Orthopeadist, especially since you have had problems in the past. A message board is not the place to seek a diagnosis for such a situation.

Not seeking a diagnosis lol. Just some tips on hip pain in relation to walking and I wanted to see if it was generally common to have that when starting a walking regimen. I'll be going to the doctor as well! :)

It could be caused from the extra weight. When I weighed more I use to get alot of back pain from carrying the extra pounds and working out it did go away after I lost 50 pounds. My legs do hurt still when I start to work out but feel better about 10 minutes in. I would suggest if it doesnt go away after losing some more weight then go see the doctor. My left hip does pop in and out of place when I first get up after having Jakie but it isnt painful.

I was curious if you went to the doctor or if your hip pain went away? I'm having pain in my left hip and it's really starting to hurt when I jog but otherwise it feels fine. I KNOW I need new shoes and I'm going to go get some today! But I feel like that won't be the cure. Thanks!

I could have written that myself. I have arthritis in knees, feet, hips. I walk about 2.5 miles 5x week and am hurting most all the time. I do ibuprofen 800mg twice daily which keeps me able to move. I starting losing weight and walking thinking it would help my painful knees, but all the excercising makes it worse. Its a catch 22. I would definitely see a Dr. who can do at least an x-ray to see if its arthritis. Sometimes a chiropractor can help.

I had hip pain 5 years ago from running overuse, while over weight (200lb at the time). I had an mri, but they couldnt diagnose me. In any case they had me do lots of hip esercises which helped get me back to walking. I could run, but don't want to test my luck :)

    1. Pull knee towards chest laying down, hold and push out against hands.
    2. Butterfly, while sitting, put feet bottoms together like indian style, and push knees towards ground.
    3. stretch! put foot up on bar while standing and lean over it.

Most importantly, go to the gym and build up quad and butt muscles with weight machines.
my favorite is tthe 4 way hip machine..10x 3 reps

Of course its better if you get professional advice, im not a physical therapist :)
    Good luck!
