People in the US - do you love your car?

My car has reached the point where my mechanic has me on speed dial, and the repair costs are eating me alive. It's time to trade it in and get something new...but what? I'll most likely lease my next car, and I'd like to keep the lease cost as low as I reasonably can.

Any recommendations for a safe, reliable and inexpensive car? Any I should avoid?

I just recently bought a 2012 Subaru Legacy and I love it. I hear you can lease for $169/mo. The gas mileage is 27-28mpg. You might want to look into the Impreza - it's the smaller car - if you're not interested in a sedan. I'm sure the gas mileage is even better and the lease would be cheaper too. Good luck! I wish we could afford two new cars because my husband's car is in the shop every other week and is costing us a fortune too!

I have a Nissan Versa. Got the basic model (roll down windows, no power locks, etc) for a pretty good price. I also get about 35 - 38 mpg which is another bonus (it's a standard).

2012 Chevy Sonic Hatchback with all the fixings, I love it. Small, good gas mileage, lots of luggage space, 10 airbags. And its freaking adorable.

Well, you are a single mom with children so you will need something to haul the little kiddies around but also something that is a bit fun to drive.
The Hyundai Sonata is a nice car, a bit sporty and fairly inexpensive.
While the Jeep Wranglers are always fun, the 4 doors are a bit pricey even for a used one.
The new Ford Taurus is anouther nice sports sedan.

i have a chrysler sebring now -2007...she's a decent car, never gave me troubles with repairs or anything and she has over 150k miles on her. so i would recomend. but i'm selling her in a few months and going to buy a Lexus RX450 because i've heard such great things and i think with a little one its much easier to have the extra room of a SUV.

2009 Hyundai Genesis v8, the sedan. Black w/ 33k miles. I love it, never had a problem yet. Drove it cross-country multiple times. Lease is up in August though so i need to decide if i'm going to buy it or get a new one!

I drive a 2009 Nissan Versa hatchback. Love her completely. She gets me 34-38 mpg (city driving; no highway at all on my commute).

'99 Pathfinder. Never once broken down on me. Had to have the timing belt replaced which was a pretty hefty bill, but literally nothing other than that. I guess you're probably looking for a newer car, though.

    Honda.

    The end.

Edit to add my Accord is 15 years old, has over 250k miles, and still gets 30-35 mpg. Win.

I love my 2010 Subaru Forrester. I purchased mine and plan to hold onto it for 10-12 years.

Wow... is that considered good in the US? I get 61.4mpg from mine. I appreciate your gas prices are a lot lower than in the UK. With that consumption and our prices I'd go bankrupt trying to get to work!

Had a 2007 Prius until April - loved it and had absolutely no problems with it - got approx 44 MPG on average. Got my Prius Plug-In in April and just love it to death. Getting approx 53 MPG on average. Easy to drive and park, very quiet, roomy and comfortable, lots of high-tech goodies came standard such as navigation, web apps (Bing, traffic, etc), satellite radio, fantastic sound system.

I am on my fourth Nissan!! My last was a Armada...LOVED IT!!! Gas ate me alive though. So I am now on my third Altima. I love them! They are great cars. Dependable and comfortable! I've had a Hondas and Toyotas and there, in my opinion, is no comparison!

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry and I'd recommend them to anyone.

I've had it for going on 7 years, bought it used, have put over 100,000 miles on it myself and it's still going strong. I have a really great mechanic, so what repairs it has required have been relatively inexpensive (timing belt and water pump replacement, wheel bearing replacements, new brakes a couple years ago). I think the worst bill was around $200-- not bad for an 11 year old car. I have the oil changed religiously and plan to drive the wheels off the thing.. which hopefully doesn't happen for another couple of years!

edit: it's also awesome on gas

2011 Nissan Murano and I LOVE it <3 I can fit 3 full size car seats across the back seat and it has a HUGE back end for shopping or what ever else I want to hall. Its got get up and go yet is still pretty good on gas. Front seats are nice and roomy and lots of features standard.

Get a Subaru, best snow cars ever, and awesome in good weather, too. Plus they last FOREVER. 200, 300, 400,000 miles easily.
