Weights and where to begin..

I have been on MFP for awhile but usually stick to some cardio workout. I have heard that weights added
to your workout can really take those pounds off.

The problem is, I haven't a clue about how to even start. What weight should I begin with and how
long do I workout with them? I have used resistance bands before, but I didnt see the difference
in them -- my husbands sees more results than I do

HELP... I want muscles (as Olivia Newton John once said) - I know, showing my age
