Are you a celiac? Or is this a self-diagnosis?

My father has celiac disease and cannot have anything with gluten. Even miniscule amounts cause an autoimmune response.

It can be tough at first but it does get easier I promise. There are tons of good cookbooks out there and it does depend on whether it is you or a young one that needs to be GF what approach you will take. Feel free to add me - Gluten free for 13 years.

    Hi

I have been coeliac for 20 years - have a look at my diary if you like or add me.

There is a group on here called gluten free which has lots of ideas.

It is easy once you understand what you can or cannot have... I have celiac but must not be as bad as some people. I can occasionally "cheat" with a tiny bite. I bake my own bread and freeze it but I also have bought the ready made ones.. Udi's is a good company for gluten free products... I use the pizza crusts.. Just add toppings...Eat 1/2 crust for a serving.... Just read all the labels and eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies--salads..I usually have a salad when we dine out.Or a burger or grilled chicken without the bun.. It is easy.. Lots of restaurants now prepare gluten free meals.. Outback even has a gluten free dessert with a flourless brownie... Haven't had one since I started MFP..Just don't panic and you will find lots of foods to eat....Chex has gluten free cereals--just not Wheat Chex!!!!
  • I have coeliac disease, I've known for four years. If you think you might have coeliac, please get tested before you cut it out! Ask your doctor to do the blood test. If you cut it out and find you get better, if you want to get officially diagnosed and get the support that comes with that diagnosis you will have to go back on a diet with gluten for a month before they can test you for coeliac. This will make you feel very ill if you have been gluten free for a while. Please go to your doctor now before you've been gluten free for too long, it will make it much easier for yo in the long run! I diagnosed myself with a testing kit that came from online, it cost about £25. You always have that option too, if you want to find out for yourself before going to the doctor.

Eating out is the hardest for me. In restaurants watch out for anything with cheese, apparently pregrated cheese is often coated with gluten containing substances to stop it sticking together, so steer clear of that. I also stay away from any sauces in restaurants, I never trust people to know what is in them after a few glutenings! Also things like meat products often have fillers like wheat in to bulk them out and make them cheaper, so always check them. In particular sausages are often not gluten free.

I tend to eat a lot of rice, vegetables and fruit. Gluten free products take some getting used to, you will soon learn which ones you can stand and which ones taste so weird it's not worth it.

I love this blog for inspiration, she has lots of ideas. http://glutenfreegirl.com/

I have Celiac and my diary is open (or feel free to add me as a friend!). Honestly, while there are a lot of new gluten free options or traditionally glutenous food (breads, crackers, etc), I've found it's easiest and cheapest to just choose naturally gluten free foods. Meats, vegetables, dairy, legumes, eggs, etc. I understand that you also have other dietary restrictions which can certainly make this more difficult. However, veggies and fruit and meat (or tofu) are both gluten free and healthy.

Thank you everyone! This has been very helpful. My other problem is that I cannot have dairy or most fresh vegetables/fruits! I'm seriously down to meat, meat and more meat! I have called and scheduled an appointment for myself to get checked out. I will check the rice that I have to see if it has wheat fillers in them. I hope not, or else it will be tough until I get everything else cleared out for foods I can eat!
